Black dress shirts can look great under grey flannel suits:

Not quite on topic, but I wondered whether a light shirt can be worn under a light suit? Not a white shirt under a cream suit which would obviously clash, but a white shirt under a sand coloured suit perhaps? If the suit is dark enough to have some contrast with the shirt is it "allowed" (in other words will it look good). My father always told me the correct shirt under a beige suit is blue but I just think white could add more formality if combined with a red or blue tie.

Well, for what it is worth, here is a late night pic of me in what is left of my best outfit, cream NRA tagged 30s overcoat, cream belted back 30s suit, orange tie and black shirt.

At least one person besided me seems to like it.

Interesting thread. I always liked the look, myself.... Yes, it can look a little 'gangsterish', which is just fine with me. The vintage gangsters, many of them at least, had style. To my eye, a black shirt also makes black shoes wearable with a light / natural / cream / light tan linen/Summer suit, somewthing which otherwise clashes overly for my tastes.

Sinister can look striking.

I have a few black dress shirts, and I used to have more. I wore them all the time with light gray suits, once in a while with blue suits, sometimes with brown suits. They make a lighter tie stand out well. If they look slightly sinister in some vague way, I like that. I like looking a little sinister.

For gosh-sakes, I used to shave my head AND eyebrows completely off and wear a fedora with that. That really scared people and made them do a double-take.

I'd rather look a little sinister than look boring.
