morning everyone , I hope all is well.

Im waiting for Bob at black sheep to get back from his big hike. while waiting im pondering my selection of what I want.

Im very interested in the black cherry. seems to be the same color as Optimos Blackberry (same vendor perhaps). This hat will be worn quite a bit (primary lid) in fall and winter when Not doing outdoor activities (I have hats for chores, hiking ...).

I originally was thinking a dark gray of some sort but when I do see gents wearing hats gray brown and black are all too common, though gray does go with most other colors.

the black cherry with that hint of purple it has will go with most items as well and be different. I did not want black .

also Ive come across some nice vintage hats recently (way too small though ) the three I saw were Gray.

gray, black and browns are very easy to procure. figured if I get a custom it should be something different.

ill be on the lookout now for some vintage lids now .

your thoughts please!

many thanks

Art's Black Cherry Lightweight in strong sunlight. Definitely different. Bob probably will use the dress weight felt which may not be quite as dark.

I find it to be a very versatile color for me.

Good afternoon gents,

thanks for the posts Hmm Lots of color variations. Different for sure, I like the darker tone I think , but purple tone is cool as I wear lots of purple. Do you all find it works with much of the wardrobe? I would think so.

Art Fawcett dress weight black cherry is in my avatar. I found it to be very versatile, though it can be considered flamboyant. If the black cherry is blacker like the lightweight Art Fawcett, it should be black with a flair which I imagine would be very versatile.

Hi

I now own a couple of black cherry hats and have also been able handle and photograph one or two others. I thought it might be of interest to create a collage of these photos. Here it is

Top row L to R is VS light weight, Northwest Hats, Penman hat company.

Bottom row VS light weight, VS light weight, Shot of the Penman and VS lightweight together.

I think it is interesting how the colours differ. I've tried as much as possible to get the colours to reflect what I saw by eye, but this is on my monitor so may vary on yours.

@Bill Hughes is looking for the older version of black cherry that is more cherry and less black than the current offering by Winchester.

I realized I have two very similar hats that shows just how dark the current black cherry dye is. The hat on the left is Winchester’s beaver in black cherry made by The Phoenix Hat Company, the hat on the right is a Selco beaver in black.

In my mind, the current black cherry is more a black hat with some interesting undertones. I do wish Winchester would bring back the older version.

I’ll also note that my black cherry is a rather stiff/firm hat. I came across an old thread a while back where Art of VS fame said he soaked the darker Winchester beaver felt bodies in Alcohol to remove some of the stiffeners. I can see why (I do love my Phoenix).

On Art's website he shows two Black Cherry offerings. A new dye lot and the old so he may have some of the old dye lot felts in his stock. Not sure what his lead time is these days.

I purchased a custom for my Daniel from Tim, Alley Kat hats...and inside it is almost a black but outside you can tell it is not black. Light seems to draw out ths actually colors and Tim does what you call lure the felt color which I do think makes some difference. But yes from seeing all the black cherry felt colors there is a difference you can notice in color for sure. Now I am going to use all the hats here for a memorial in one room dedicated to my late husband, hats shoes ties and a few suits all on display.

I would love to see what the older version of black cherry looks like, in person. I only have the Winchester version I ordered for a guy this year as an example. Oddly, I didn't really see the "cherry" until I got it under some natural light. My wife spotted it immediately which probably seez more about me than anything.

I’m still trying to find a stand-in for the old black cherry. I was informed that “Rust” is too brown (a nice color but not what I’m after). Oxblood is not available and the felts that might suit my needs are only available through hatters who charge way more than I want to spend (e.g. Optimo).

Has anyone had a hat made in “Cabernet?” It looks like it might work, but it’s hard to tell by looking at such a small piece of felt.
