My birthday was yesterday and it was akin to so many of my past birthdays. In short, I live in Iowa where 12/11 is consitently cold, icy, snowy, gray and miserable. As a rule, my friends don't want to leave the house - for anything (think John Goodman in The Big Lebowski with "Shomer Shabbas!").

As per usual, I did not go out to eat, I wasn't able to find anything entertaining, those close to me made quite pitiful attempts to warm the day but were sure to sprinkle in bouts of self-pity, I ended up being the servant rather than the served (which is how I typically prefer it any other day) and overall, I was rather disappointed.

My point in creating this thread was not to cry in my milk this morning (although it sure feels nice to tell someone), but to get an idea of whether or not you Loungers have the same problem. I'm not interested in the, "You should be grateful for..." lecture, I've already heard that one.

Do you find yourself disappointed consistently on your birthdays or does someone regularly find a way to sweep you off your feet each year?

Birthday's can be a serious problem for some folks, akin to Christmas or New Year for others. Being a reformed OCD, I use a couple of control methods learned along the way. I always spend the entire day telling everone I meet that it's MK Gandi's birthday! I also keep telling everyone that October is a wonderful month in East Tennessee. It seems to work (i.e. keeps me distracted).. Ron

I haven't willfully celebrated a birthday since I turned 21 (which was a serious blowout),many moons ago. A birthday party has always seemed to me to be something more suited for children or Seniors.[huh]

Undertow, Happy Belated Birthday! I'm sorry about your bummer day yesterday. :( I've always felt that people with December birthdays or any birthday near a holiday (mine is often on Easter), get the shaft. December in particular! It's often cold, miserable and then you have holidays to top it off. It should be fun and even magical, but it never seems to be. My sister, and now my daughter's birthdays are on the 28 of December. My poor sister, every time we tried to throw her a party, no one showed up. Except the neighbor kid. It was terrible. I don't remember her ever having the kind of birthday other people get to have. I've managed to make it a little better for my daughter by having her parties early in the month, never after the 15th. They seem to go well. And it helps that now we live in Socal, where the weather is much more cooperative, and helps for people to come out. If we still lived in Montana, it would suck. And that's the fact. I don't know about others, but I'm weird about my birthday. I consider it MY day. Growing up, I got lumped in with Easter and the damn bunny, and then also with my Mom, whose birthday is 2 days after mine. :rage: Now I seem to make up for it by having a birthday week! ha ha! I have had few great, memorable birthdays. Often times, my friends would end up getting into huge brawls, or other bad things would happen.

I remember my 22nd birthday. I was awakened by my dad wishing me a happy birthday, and then telling me my grandfather died that morning. I went to school, came home, my husband (then fiance) was deployed in Japan, and none of my friends would make the trip over the bridge with me to go to SF. I was so bummed, my parents were gone, my friends were no where to be found, my fiance was overseas, and on my birthday there was a special show at my favorite place Bimbo's. I was all dressed up and ready to go and about to cry. I decided to forget it, and my sister and I were going to go to Denny's for some dinner. (she wasn't 21 yet) Then just as I was getting out of my fancy duds, one of my friends called back and said, "Give me a good reason I should go out... " I said, "Well, it's my birthday" And he said, "Well why didn't you say so? I'll be right over!" :D It started out pretty crappy, but it turned out very lovely at the end. I've never forgotten that, and I always remember my friends birthdays and to try and make them feel extra special if I have the chance to do so.

If I lived near you, I wouldn't let anything stop me from doing something special with you on your birthday! We feel you're pain in my family. I hope it gets made up for somehow.:)

Well I have a twin so I am very lucky. We always make sure to get each other gifts and even if we just hang out at home and make dinner and watch movies it's still nice. If I didn't have her I am sure I'd have less satifying birthdays.

Happy Belated Birthday!

Every stinking year I forget my own birthday. What's even sadder is that my own mother forgets it too! She sometimes sends me a card on my brother's birthday in May (mine's March 9). Its just like Christmas, I'm ignored every year. :(

Gee, thanks for depressing me even more!

Happy (impending) Birthday to PSG and LD! I think more people should be born on the same day -- it makes it so much easier to keep track!

As for me -- 40 was my last birthday. Ain't celebrated one since, and don't plan to.

undertow....HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY! and i'm sorry it sucked.
since my poor mother is no longer with us, i am regularly the one to suggest things for my birthday. the last few years i haven't even bothered with it because it makes everything bittersweet to be the one to do all the work. to be frank, i don't remember the last time my birthday has been memorable. mine is three days before christmas, so it's usually lumped together with the holiday festivities and aside from a small dinner with a few family members (which is always pleasant), generally ignored.
i'm turning thirty this year...and i wanted a big swing party, but no one will be around (namely, me) or interested in dressing up. i need friends with a sense of fun and adventure!!!
anyway...the point...i'm sorry that your day was less than exciting.

I'm not real interested in my own birthday. The date happens to be 09/11 and for the past several years I have not been in the mood to celebrate. On the other hand my daughter has a 12/25 birthday and makes out like a bandit every year. People are in the mood to spend money on gifts and she rakes it all in.

I am never disappointed on my birthday...My birthday is 4 days before valentine's day so I like to turn my birthday into a week long event!! lol lol
My Dad always rings my doorbell at 7 am and brings me a cake and flowers! I make a pot of coffee and we eat cake for breakfast and have some Dad/Daughter time. :D

OMG WE HAVE THE SAME BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!! Johnny Whitaker does, too! I know because I loved Sigmund and the Sea Monsters as a tot. lol

Happy Birthday All!

Johnny Whitaker is quite character. We spent some time together a few years ago at a convention along with his TV sister...Kathy Garver. What a hoot! Of course there was a bunch more characters hanging around like Eddie Haskell (Ken Osmond), Lumpy (Frank Bank), Timmy (Jon Provost) and several others!! I was in heaven. My son couldn't figure out why...!!

Oh, gawd, I usually end up with guys who forget (or pretend to forget) my birthday, They always magically remember the next day, or after they get their next paycheck. But the moment is over. I don't follow "The Rules" for most things, but if a guy forgets my birthday, he is out of there. I hate cheap and inconsiderate men.

Happy (late) birthday. :)
