Real news from Le Béret Français:
upload_2018-3-27_16-35-4.png

The (summer) Béret Eco-Jean is made of 100% recycled fibres; 48% cotton from recycled denim, 47% polyester from recycled drink bottles and 5% of a blend between these fibres.

upload_2018-3-27_16-40-8.png

The recycled threads’ impact on the environment is on average 98% less than when using new raw materials (EVEA Conseil, ISO 14040/14044). Already subjected to harsh conditions in their previous lives, these fibres are more resistant to stress and friction than new threads.

Le Béret Français is proud to present the first and only ecological berets from recycled fibers, a patented process by the company’s spinner. The Bérets Eco-Jean are available in black, navy, light-blue and French-khaki; all one-size models in a diameter of 10 pouces/28cm @ $34.50.

And, at the same page, the new Classiques in French khaki and Truffle at only $33.50.

Hi gang, I wore my bérets (BA & Epinosa Cotton) everyday in Chile for the past couple of weeks. I wore the cotton one during the day and it really helped keep the sun off my face and keep me cooler during their end of Summer early Fall warm sunny weather.

This is the photo of the palace behind me which was bombed by a jet fighter in 1973 during the Military coup d'etat lead by Pinochet. He overthrew the democratically elected Salvador Allende who was loved and respected by many Chileans.

View attachment 112388 View attachment 112387 View attachment 112335 Well, it’s been a spell since I’ve posted a photo and I wear Bérets more often than not. This is the wunnerful Wooly Mammoth from a couple a days ago. Super soft, very comfortable and the color is great.

That beret just fits you. We talk about wearing the hat and not letting no it wear you and your photo exemplifies that.

I might be biased as at first glance I thought you were a thin Jerry Garcia. Meant in the best possible way. :)

A lot of Basque bérets are worn in this 2017 Basque-language drama film directed by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño.[1] The film is based on the real story of Miguel Joaquín Eleizegui Arteaga, a 19th century man who suffered from gigantism and was known as the "Giant from Altzo".

Plot
After the First Carlist War, Martín heads back to his family's farmhouse, and he finds out with surprise that his little brother Joaquín is much taller than usual height. Martín becomes convinced that people will be willing to see the "tallest man on Earth", so they travel around Europe, and the wealth and the level of fame they achieve changes the family forever.

In most languages, the word for 'beret' refers to the supposed Basque origin (although of course, the beret's origin lies in the French Béarn). In French Béret Basque, German Baskenmütze, Italian Basco, Norwegian baskerlue, etc. In Dutch however, the beret is called alpinopet, or simply alpino (literally: cap of the Alps).

These days alpino's are rare to find in the Dutch landscape, but from WWII until the 1970's, it was one of the most commonly seen pieces of headgear.

Over the years, I have posted regularly on Dutch alpino's, but it always bugged me how little visual information I could find. That changed when I found a website dedicated to trucks in the northern Netherlands; a treasure trove of photo's depicting old trucks and their proud drivers with alpinopet (and some with wooden shoes too!).

You are right, these berets look like the Italian Roma's and Czech Radiovka's, but most likely they are not. In those days (the years after the war until the 1970's) Italian berets were worn in Italy on a large scale, but rarely outside the country. Czech, or then Czechoslovakian berets were exported, but mainly to the countries of the Warsaw Pact (it was the period of the Cold War, of course).
upload_2018-4-5_17-44-23.png

One more, Scania truck with crane, 1970s
The alpino's worn in the Netherlands were typically of French and Spanish make; Blancq-Olibet, Beighau, Laulhère, Mondine and many others from France, Boinas Elósegui and Boinas La Encartada from Spain.
Berets/alpino's that are still in production now, and are virtually the same as the berets on the photo's, are the bérets bayadère in 9.5p, the Etchea berets in 9p, the
boinas Exposición Basicá and Super Lujo in the diameters under 265mm (9.5p).

The frequently heard opinion that "berets are typically worn by old men" is, as we boineros know, total rubbish. Over the course of running The Beret Project (almost 10 years now) I have given plenty (visual) evidence of this.
One area where this is especially evident, is in sports. Both for rugby and football (soccer) players, the beret was and is the headgear of choice.

At times to the extend of wearing nothing but a beret, as these Kiwi students from Otago University show:
upload_2018-4-9_13-36-48.png

For years, Laulhère has supplied French (Gascon) rugby teams with berets, often with labels matching the purpose.

upload_2018-4-9_13-42-3.png

The 2016 UEFA EURO Finals were hosted by France, reason for Adidas to bring out an official games beret. Largely sold out, South pacific Berets has now what is likely the last remaining stock of these berets - a rare find!
upload_2018-4-9_13-51-21.png
upload_2018-4-9_13-51-34.png

Made of a wool and viscose blend, these navy berets are fitted with a comfortable elastic
tricolore headband and 2 x 2 airvents. The Adidas logo is embroidered on the lower half of the beret and attached are all labels stating it's origin and authenticity.

Good idea right there.

Since I've been working in downtown DC, I've noticed an uptick in men wearing non-baseball style hats. Some wool and fur fedoras, but mostly "outback" styles.

Two years ago, you wouldn't see a man wearing a beret. These days, I've been noticing guys wearing them. Not a lot, mind you, but they're catching on a little. Mostly smaller diameters, but, hey!

The frequently heard opinion that "berets are typically worn by old men" is, as we boineros know, total rubbish.

Unfortunately, in my part of Germany, I am about the youngest to wear a beret. And I am already old at 58.
The young ones wear those high-domed Baseball Cap, what else.
In between, there is no headgear, save the more unobtrusive Peaked Cap, worn for practical reasons.
Very few men about my age and older I encounter with a beret. And these are live-long wearers, from the look of it.
Interestingly, one part of the male population sticks out: older men who emigrated from Russia. They wear almost always wear Flat Caps.

Here I am, combining my "Bleu de Travail" with a bit of earthen colours in the shape of a beret from BE and a nylon watchband.
