Here's one for our side!!!

Pub ordered to play only easy listening
By BEN LANGFORD

AN Nortnern Teritory pub has been ordered to play only ``easy listening'' music.

This means Barry Manilow is in, the Rolling Stones out.

And under a ruling by the Licensing Commission, the music must stop at 10pm.

The easy listening edict has been imposed for the beer garden at the Alice Springs Plaza Hotel.

The commission fears noisier live performers would lead to ``anti-social behaviour'' from young people.

The decision came as part of a review of the hotel's licensing conditions forthe courtyard.

A decision to allow more people than there are seats in the courtyard was found to be working well.

Seats must be provided for 80 per cent of the maximum number of courtyard patrons.

But the commission decided to impose ``entertainment'' restrictions on the bar.

Plaza Hotel general manager Ian Sloan said that the decision was suggested by hotel management.

But he admitted: ``It is hard to define, isn't it?''

The commission ruled: ``Before 22:00 hours (10pm) each night pre-recorded and live music (solos or duos only) generally identified as `easy listening' may be played in the courtyard. After 22:00 hours each night there shall be no music in the courtyard.''

Easy Listening is equated to sappy, middle-of-the-road stuff - Manilow, Air Supply, Kenny G, and those of that ilk. It is not classic pop, standards, or jazz. It is just leisure-suited version of all of that, designed to lull the masses.

If anything, having that music playing would make me want to drink more.

If Kenny G is middle of the road why doesn't someone just run him over?

I think you will find that much of the music from the golden era is nowadays classed as easy listening.
I work at a commercial Easy Listening station and whilst we do play the above mentioned artists, many of the favorites mentioned on this website are part of ours and many other easy station's playlists.

Sorry to break the news. On a daily basis I will often have Frank, Tony, Dean, Glenn Miller,Lena Horne, Duke Ellington in the mix with Barry Manilow, Kim Carnes, James Taylor and others. Incidently as I work at a commercial station I don't choose the music or the mix, it is on the computer and I have to play what I am given in the order it is given. Easy Listening is a lot broader nowadays. Stop by a record store and you will find many crooners and big band artists in the "easy listening" section. Sorry

Oh, I don't disput that. Music of Your Life stations will go from Sinatra to Bobby Goldsbough. Doesn't make it right. I think all of us here though make those districtions between "Easy Listening" and "Great American Song Book." We cool like 'dat.

Yes, absolutely. This is a commercial format and has to support itself by playing to (slowly) changing demographics and marketers who consider it slightly less sexy than dead-of-night infomercial TV land.

A lot of the stuff Loungers - me included - are mad about has no viable audience left at all. It would be better classified "Music of Your Death."

Yes it is sad that there are few places that play our kind of music which is why I liked that story, sure they probably won't play our kind of easy listening but it it a small triumph against the evils of rock!

Certainly do have a flip around the dial as you will often find public radio stations playing this kind of music along with some commercials.

Sadly though the term easy listening is a dirty word amongst younger people and unfortunatly a few on this board don't realise the music they listen to is in that category.

As a professional radio announcer I love the fact that at 34 I sound old enough to work on Easy Listening as I would hate to have to play top forty all day. Mind you I did when I first got into the business and it has taken me a long time to get to this point.

Don't care.

My favorite artist is Don Williams (don't know him? Shame on you!) and I don't even listen to country, but I took my son to his last concert, because I KNOW he's family friendly. I don't take to the idea any music is evil, to me it's that idea that's pushing the preforming arts out of public schools.

In a bar, I could care less what they're playing as long as it's NOT karoke night. I have a kid and it's all noise in the end.

I'm sorry my friends, but I will take the Stones over Barry Manilow anyday. While I've got nothing against the music of the Great age, Barry Manilow and Kenny G simply don't seem to fit in the equation...
