you could ask him if he could reproduce this for under £500:

This event will actually be one of the few times where one will be able to place single MTO orders, so I'll ask. I'm very interested in one like that myself. The price would then be about the same as for the one that I posted earlier. :) It'll be interesting to hear what he'll say about the curved ankle.

EDIT: I'll also ask how many pairs is needed for their regular MTO program. Maybe we could arrange some Fedora Lounge MTOs in the future?

Interesting topic, I JUST picked up a pair of Allen Edmonds Fifth Street (nice match to my Fifth Avenue, no?) from the outlet for ~$120

Interestingly the ones I got have a rubber overlay (leather sole with rubber grip portion). According to the salesman these were apparently a customer order that was turned down/returned or something to that effect. Wearing them for the first time today!

Unfortunately they're not on the AE site anymore so I guess they were discontinued.

HBK :p That's mean! Tempting for sure.
What about you, HBK? They have leather soles and captoes. Would you order them?
I would if I had a steady income at the moment.

What are decently made balmoral boots within the range of 120 to 180 U.S. dollars? I could consider a new pair of dress boots to supersede my gradually wearing out black chelsea boots, eventually, and balmorals look good. If they are above $180, up to around $200, feel free to recommend them. Thank you.

as far as "decently made" you're going to be hard pressed to do better than Allen Edmonds at the price. Yes these show about double your range, but I picked up a pair at the outlet for $129 I think... They are part of the "seasonal" collection and will likely be on clearance in the spring.

I love these boots. I have them in both brown and black. They are durable, and well made, FOR THE PRICE POINT. You can do a lot better than AE, but probably not for such a humble amount of fundage. You can also find Fifth Streets on ebay pretty frequently, new or lightly used, which would probably bring them closer to your ideal price point, the Good.

Incidentally, AE are the nicest of what I have, and I've been pretty happy. What do you consider much better (aside from "bespoke")? I'm aware of Alden, but that's about it as far as premium dress shoes.

I know Brooks Brothers has some high end stuff too.

There are HUNDREDS of makers that are better than AE. A better list would be. "what is AE better than?"
