Bakelite

I collect bakelite and have many of the usual items including vintage cameras and radios. The more electic items in my bakelite collection include vintage shaving implements - razors and such from the 30's and 40's.

It seems there are 2 tests to see if something's bakelite, and several guidelines: the tests involve either rubbing a Q-tip with the "scrubbing bubbles" product on a clean inconspicuous area to see if the swab turns yellow, and the other is touch a spot with a high-heated object & see if it starts to melt (bakelite doesn't).

you can also rub a piece of bakelite with your thumb rapidly, and it should give a formaldehyde-like smell, since Bakelite is phenol & formaldehyde.

i only have a couple pieces of Bakelite; one is a geometric Art Deco pin, my phone, and a Butterscotch Bakelite crufix with the "7 Sorrows of Christ" embedded in it (there's holes in the cross, with clear tubes with little images you can see, kinda like a Viewmaster. Very surreal.
