What would you call this style of hat?

View attachment 676744

It may have started out as some named model but it just looks like an open crown hat with what we refer to as an organic crease; a somewhat random crease pattern that happens over time, particularly when the wearer doesn't feel the need to keep to the smooth and /or symmetric creases traditionally used.

I want a hat like this one. Can anybody tell me the brim size, approximate crown height, maybe name of similar hat? The last pick is kind of a joke and kind of not. I like the general shape, higher front pinch lower rear crown.

I would send the pictures to whomever you choose to make the hat. I'd go 5 ¾ in crown with a 2 ¼ in brim or less with an overwelt and please keep your finger away from the trigger until you are ready to fire.

ET, good to see you again. Pic #3 the crown style is generally called a tugboat style When the crown front is higher than the crown rear. It’s a favorite of Eric @Short Balding Guy. You might contact him for general dimensions.
Thanks Jack!!! I bought a hat yesterday on eBay that I thought I may be able to style to suit what I want. Tugboat style! I never knew. Here is some pics of the hat I bought. It is Royal Stetson Fedora.

Does anyone have information on when Stetson produced the Old West Collection line? I've found older posts from 2015 where people were discussing wanting some of the models, but I've also seen indications they were made much earlier than that. Was it a designation the Stetson used more than once? I just acquired a Bat Masterson from the OWC, and the paper under-band tag appears WAY older than 9 or so years. Thanks in advance!

out of curiosity: what’s the lowest open crown hat you’ve ever owned?

and what do you think the lowest a crown could go and still get a somewhat decent (albeit shallow) fedora crease?

thanks!

The lowest I have ever made was 5" for a pork pie with a finished crown of just under 4". I would think that too low for a fedora and the proportions would just look off. I suggest a 5 1/4" open would get you a 4 1/4" finished crown with a modest centre dent.

Mine is a 4 inch pork pie (as creased) but that would not work with a fedora. The crease and side dents would rub my head.

re: cost of hats in Italy.... This morning I had coffee with one my Deep East Texas neighbors who mentioned that she was getting ready to fly to Italy to visit her mother for a while. Im not sure where her Mom lives but she will be flying into Venice. ( an extended trip so they may be going other places) I joked that she should do some Borsalino shopping for me while there... she said they would need some education about what to look for but would be glad to see whats there

Most important question #1... considering costs + customs fees, would it be any cheaper than ordering from a shop here like Henry the Hatter or DelMonicos?

#2... Since this would be a New Mfg Italian hat, are there any models/ lines to avoid?

Ill be looking for something in a fedora with about a 2-1/2" brim, 5"ish crown, bound brim and narrow ribbon and a smooth felt ( similar to the "Fred Bear fedora")

Shes full blooded Italian and fluent in 4 or 5 languages so so wont be limited to touristy shops

Something like these:

Any input is greatly appreciated

Kind of a Fred Bear Update.... I just got an email back from Henry the Hatter with some info...Freds hats were basically an Alessandria with a slightly shorter crown. Said that in Pre 2015 days, dealers could order Borsalino hats and have their own model name embossed...H the H sold them as a " Borsalino Ranger". That model is no longer in production, but he did verify that the one DelMonico sells with the bound edge and narrow ribbon is a really close match

When I was a kid growing up in Truro, IA our neighbor, Lester Freeman hunted whitetails with an 80 lb recurve and a light colored thin ribbon hat. His tree stand was likely just sitting on a large branch off a big Oak. He was also the town Scout Master. When Lester bagged a buck it made the newspapers. We're talking '60s when even seeing a whitetailed deer was a big deal let along bagging one with a lottery tag.

Hey, all, I finally got a nice-looking Stetson 4x Beave felt and a great brown color hat from the 80s/90s. I honestly don't know. I wanted to reshape it with a steamer but I have some problems. I want to shape the top to something like this:
84614fbc5919d9e80c9df1536b7fe30d-1742754167.jpg

But it's not working as expected and would need some help. My questions are:
I steamed it, but a line is visible on the top. Should I steam it more or do anything else? I added a photo of how it looked the first time I steamed it.
The hat is old and smells like an old closet. I put it in a bag with newspaper, but it still has this smell. What else would you suggest? Febreze the last result.
