Thanks, gentlemen. A service provider, rather than a maker, makes a lot of sense. Likely not buying this one, so internal investigation won't be an option. Oh well!

Thanks again.

Curious if an older Akubra that is marked as 7-1/4 is the same or different than a US 7-1/4? ( the one I noticed did not have any cm size marking) It always seemed to me that an Akubra 59 was in between a Stetson 7-1/4// 7-3/8 for fit on my noggin

My experience has been that vintage Stetsons run a little large. I have a modern Stetson hemp Stratoliner that runs way large, a full size or more - need to sell it. I'm a size 58.5 cm, kind of an in between. Akubra 58 fits me but they shrink over time so 59 with a shim fits better

I agree that most of the time an Akubra 59 fits me the same as most Stetson 58/ 7-1/4 (Im also in between 58 and 59)

The Akubra hat in question is only marked as 7-1/4 ( no cm size)... my question is ... is an Austrailian 7-1/4 the same as a US 7-1/4? (or is it like a European size 7-1/4)

I’m curious about the crown height and any impressions owners have. Thanks.

Did you ever get an answer to this? I saw a Stetson Danbury in an online store, and am tempted. The crown looks a good height but hard to tell!

Came across this, and have been completely unable to ascertain anything about the maker. Anyone recognize this? Thanks in advance for any help!

If this is the hat I think it is, I bought it out of curiosity before I saw this post. It was advertised as a Dobbs and was being sold with the Dobbs box. Starting bid was 59.00 with 39.10 shipping. I contacted the seller and explained that it was not, in fact a Dobbs hat. Explained that I did not want the box as I already have a couple of those. We finally came to an agreement after nobody bid on the hat (high shipping cost probably scared people off )and I got the hat for 59.00 with 14.50 shipping. It is due to arrive next Monday and y'all will be seeing soon after that.

Hey, everybody. Glad to be a member finally. My hats are mostly Akubras. Recently, I went down the rabbit hole of trying to figure out what hat Dave Navarro was wearing during a recent on-stage fight with the lead singer of Jane's Addiction. I think I figured it out that this must be a Stetson Temple, but let me know what you think. I was thinking of replicating the look with an Akrubra Squatter open crown based on what I've read about the quality of the Temple. Thoughts appreciated.

Anywho, thanks for letting me in and pondering my newbie question.

The hat in the picture you show has a wider brim than the specs of the Temple. The Squatter(3" brim) specs are closer to the hat in your pictures with one major difference, the Squatter has a brim binding.

Hi, another newbie with a question. I like the shape/dimensions of the Fed IV: The untapered tall crown, raw edge and dimensional brim. However, I'm not a fan of the traditional ribbon. I'd like something more casual looking.
Is replacing the ribbon the way to go? Are there other brands/models that have the shape and qualities of the Fed IV that I mentioned above that I like, but with a more casual ribbon? I'm aware of the Campdraft similarities, but it doesn't have the dimensional brim or raw edge.
Thanks in advance!

The Temple would most be like the Fed IV, which also has a dimensional brim.

I have a few comments here. First, if you are interested in the FED IV, then I would get one now. The Hattery in Katoomba, Australia is the only place to get a new one and they are in the middle of some mysterious shake-up of that line. I just had a look and they have only size 56 in Tawny Fawn but quite a few sizes of the Carbon Grey available - both in the imperial felt. They have no Heritage Quality at all.

But I hear your question: what to do about the ribbon and bow? I am also not a huge fan of the FED IV ribbon/bow and since I have three of them, I finally just removed them on one of mine. I actually think the hat looks darn cool without the ribbon (unfortunately, I don’t have any good photos of it).

You can easily add a hat band of some kind, either after you remove the ribbon or you can even put one on over the top of the ribbon. I added a campaign cord to mine after I took the bow off and think it looks darn cool (again, unfortunately I don’t have a single photo of it - I’m in Asia right now so no chance to take a photo, either).

In other words, there are options. But you don’t have any options until you actually get a hat… and if you don’t act quickly, you might not be able to get a FED IV unless you get lucky on eBay (which I have done, so it’s not impossible with the FED IV). Could be The Hattery comes out with some spanky new Federation design (the FED V?) but they aren’t telling us what’s going on so we’re all just guessing.

You can also replace the ribbon with a thin ribbon or a better quality ribbon - if you don’t feel comfortable doing that yourself, then we here on the Lounge can help you find someone who can do it for you.

Honestly, I don’t know a single modern model out there that satisfies me like the FED IV does - the quality on the Stetson Temple is so questionable, I just never even bothered. If I had a bigger head I’d go for a Squatter or an Adventurer (both made by Akubra - the Adventurer exclusively for David Morgan) but with my small head size both of those models will look unattractive on me. But I think you’ll have the same ribbon problem with them as well.

My advice: buy a carbon grey FED IV while you can and sort out the ribbon once you get it.

Thank you for the info and advice. Very helpful!

I've also reached out to the Hattery and asked about the options/difficulty in replacing the ribbon, and they warned me about this in their reply:

"you don’t want to replace with a narrower ribbon either as holes in the felt may be noticeable."

Have you experienced this? That's what I'm afraid of, because I would most likely replace it with something narrower for the more casual look.
