all completely inferior to walking into a store and touching the merchandise before buying

if you are in proximity ... which he is ... then this is the best way and I don't even think it is a disputable proposition

I don't care if you are buying a hat , a car , a dog , or an umbrella

if you are able to get to the establishment ... go to there and touch it or something like it and see if they can get what you want ... in person

period
...and if they cant...? Or if they cant get it in a timely manner...? Which is why I suggested the purchaser do a deep search online.

If you have the option I would prefer going to the maker itself. I'm not talking about hats only but in general. If the person knows what he's talking about I prefer speaking with them.

Now that's maybe just me but it does help if they see what you can do, and what is possible. That's also the reason I don't have a store but a workshop so to speak. (Atelier)
This way the people can see what is going on and how things are made.

On the other hand it's not always possible, and I have done fine without it. Skype, email, telephone etc all works very well. If you know how to speak the language and are comfortable with the product you're selling you should be fine. I have no excuse for my stinking accent though :D
I do enjoy it all, honestly.
If the end result is what it needs to be I'm fine with it.

But nothing will beat me offering my clients coffee and working together to get the hat they desire.
I might randomly throw some ribbon at them out of pure excitement though :D

Then again, good hatmakers are rare, so we will have to make do with what we have communication wise.

I don't know that we have any clue at all what Stetson's designations mean after 1968, do we? Previous to that, at least we know some of what things might have meant, but after that? What's a 500X? 30X? Who the hell knows?

Question: Any experience shaping an Akubra Country Club for better fit?
Mine fits a little tight front and back and a little loose on the sides, and when I push the sides in a little it gets good.
So I thought its worth asking about how to make that small change permanent. I imagine most know that the Country Club is made of poly straw, not natural fiber.

There are great pictures for just posting on the Internet found throughout these various threads. Especially the indoor pictures with controlled lighting, etc. What is everyone using for cameras? Just smartphone cameras? And what about lighting?
