Question about Akubras.

I bought an Angler about a year ago, and I was disappointed that the brim wasn't as stiff as I like. Ditto a Plainsman I got off eBay a few months later.

Does Akubra make a hat with a really stiff brim, kind of like a lot of Stetson cowboy hats where the brim won't move unless you steam it?

I finaly just made out "Railbird" on the sweat!

Stetson did different types of brim stitching on a number of hats. I don't think the triple stitch was relegated to a single model.

Seems to me I've seen a few Railbird models with 3 rows of brim stitching... but some without, too.

Col. Hans Landa: [giddy] Oooh, that's a bingo! Is that the way you say it? "That's a bingo?"

Lt. Aldo Raine: You just say "bingo."

Col. Hans Landa: Bingo! How fun! But, I digress. Where were we?

:p

Maybe a silly basic question...but what is the most common men's hat size? I've googled and seem to come up with different answers. [huh]

Thanks

When, today or yesterday?
It seems that the average hat size is one or two sizes bigger today than in was in the year 1900.

Given the volume of hats sold versus the documentation we have here, trying to determine an answer to this question is rank speculation. Any assertion made on the topic is speculation based on anecdotal evidence.

I have no idea how stiff any of the akubra brand hat brims are...but you can buy a small pump spray bottle of hat stiffener and use it on the hat you would desire to have a stiffer brim on, it does work. I think Bickmore is the brand name of one popular spray to use on a hat. Hope that helps you some.

I would want a 7 1/2 as well, long oval if possible which probably means I need a 7 5/8. There is a seller on the bay that sells new but they are over $1000 for a collapsible and I don't really need one, but it would be cool. I was just amazed at the abundance of 7's out there.

I believe the reason for this is as nutrition and development has improved so much over the past hundred years, average head size has grown along with average height and build in the US/EU/Japan. Consequently there are many surviving silk toppers in the smaller sizes from the golden age of top hat wearing and manufacture. Bigger silk top hats for Royal Ascot etc. in perfect condition can go for £6,000 or £10,000 I believe.

Thanks, Al. Apparently the problem was on my side. I just waited a while, let my computer stop smoking and cool down, and all's well. Dagnab contraptions!

I'll try posting this here so as not to clutter the forum with a separate thread:

If I'm a 60 in Stetson (a Saxon in this case) and 61 in Borsalino (last I checked), what size Akubra would fit me? I'm considering a Stylemaster or similar.

I'd go with Stetson size for Akubra size. I'm a 61 in both.
It does depend on what Akubra model you are looking at too. Fed4's run smaller than say a Campdraft & Squatter.
I have a Boss of the Plains, Bushman, 5 Campdrafts & Fed4, all are 61. All my Stetsons are 61 as well. So are my vintage Borso's too.
