The one, Hughes is wearing there, is a Stetson Whippet - or a Whippet clone. That's a fedora. Your's is a Homburg, which is quite different

Some help dating British vintage hats, please.

At the age of 51 I am wearing hats (other than the occasional baseball cap....) for the first time, largely in part to inspiration from everyone on here where I have been a lurker for some time. To be honest I have never considered myself a 'hat person', but seeing all you wearing yours with pride has given me the confidence to try.

I've bought a few recently, but even after looking through threads on here, am struggling to date them. I didn't pay a lot for any of them so it's not that important, but I'd like to know if anyone can help. They are all in exceptional condition, though need a little re-shaping so will be following the advice on here.

Any help at all with dating or anything else would be greatly appreciated. The bowler is actually a little large, but my wife has solved that by pinching it.........

Welcome Milamber.

The GADunn is probably 50s - Ive got a very similar one.

The Gieves & Hawkes looks newer - maybe 70s and probably made for them by Christys

The Trilby is probably of European manufacture - late 50s through to late 60s.

The Bowler is difficult to date but probably post 1953 (lack of Appointment to the King), the red liner and the address, but pre 70s as they went out of business in the late 60s.

ok, I know this has probably been asked before, but seeing that I've recently bought 2 wool felt Pork Pie hats, I'd just like your views.The UK is well known for its unpredictable weather, and I don't want my hats to get caught in a downpour without some sort of protection, seeing that wool felt is known for its shrinking abilities.... So what are your views?

Have used Scotchguard on my woolie crushers for years with good results. Water into the wool fibers is not desired so this helps repel it.

it looks more fedora than homberg and to me it looks possibly could be converted into a whippet clone
any idea how to date a dobbs hat?

That was definitely once a Homburg.

Yep. A homburg in its past life.

Make that three votes for a Homburg. The front brim has been forced down, when it really wasn't designed to do that. Also, it's a modern Dobbs, within the last twenty years or so. I think the Sulgrave as a model could date as early as the late-1980s, but this one is probably newer.

Very correct Brad...also the Sulgrave name is the model name of the Homburg.

and i know theyre threads about converting hombergs into fedoras and how you should sell the homberg and buy a fedora
but with a little steam and a lot of ambition this sulgrave could be a fedora

any advice on the best way to do this the tea kettle isnt steaming enough
i have a stetson royal deluxe that is identicle to my sulgrave and im happy with it as a homberg
but what im trying to create is a poor mans whippet

If you dont have a flange to get it correct... maybe wet it down with water.
I dont mean soak but spritz so the felt becomes easy to work.
I have done felt this way many times with no ill effect.
BUT ....
you may have other results.

If I were going to give it a try, I'd strip it, turn it inside out, reblock it and sew all the trim back on. That way, the wider part if the ribbon binding would be on the top of the brim, and the narrower part on the bottom (like my 1950's Stetsonian, which very closely resembles my Whippet).
