I don't really need a Worth and Worth hand dyed panama, do I?

I just can't see to pull the trigger on one of these hats, which in and of itself may be a sign. I know these won't be everyone's cup of tea here, as they are decidedly "fashion" hats, but I really like a lot of their hats.

Sure, they're price/weave count ratio is not great...and we're heading into winter. But they're having a black Friday sale, so this is the least over priced they will get.

You have such an eclectic style and I have no problem seeing you in that hat. I like the second better, but that’s just me.

I prefer the first one myself but, unless I suddenly became wealthy enough to live out the rest of my days very comfortably, I couldn't see myself spending that much for a hat even at their discounted price. But that's just me. If you like a hat and can afford it, pull the trigger. Who cares what we think?

I did end up going for the black "Virgil" hat. I've almost bought this hat twice before...last year on black friday and this past April when I was looking for a NOLA straw hat (for a trip that actually ended up overcast and cool) The price is prohibitive, but I do appreciate the relatively straight sided crown and wiiiiide brim, and the color of course. Hard to find a black straw hat! I had bought that Tesi parabuntal that never made it to me, but that's one of the only other black straws I've seen. I almost opted for a hemp Stratoliner, but those Hatco straws have such a deep flange that the brims look real short.

I like the history I thought I found here.......but as Jack has said it IS just a fashion show with people who don't give a damb............and just want to aquire, or sell for as much as they can, to other people who don't give a damb either...............

Mark, even if you stick with your decision to go nuclear and bow out, please don't remove your historical contributions. They are still valuable as a resource to those of us who care about the history.

Your position is shared by many and i personally ask that you reconsider.
No matter what others say or do with their hats, no matter the direction the lounge form has changed to at present, the biggest most important part of it is the participation of people such as yourself. Those vested in an ideal, that express it respectfully and with compassion.
To refrain and withhold, to withdrawl during a time of need will only serve to worsen the situation as seen in your eyes and many others. Your views are not a descenting opinion here at the lounge, they are the backbone of tradition championed by all at heart that love hats and if not presented will serve to only accelerate the destruction of the form and formality of the lounge that has been revered by so many, especially first day hat people, for so long. Without your and other likeminded hat lovers “spark”, there will be no fire to start in those yet to find this fine family and the current fire will only burn as the wind blows!
So Mark, might i be so bold as to suggest something to consider?
1. Author some threads that allow your passion to grow and draw likeminded members and influence potential new ones. Construct it to your liking by defining it’s goal and direction.
2. Plant the seed, water it and watch it grow unto a tree that withstands the winds of time.
3. Worry not of the treads that distress and contribute only to those that compel.

A wise man once told me, “Bowen, why call misery up on the phone?”.
I could go on and on Mark but suffice it to say...Please reconsider..!!!
I think you will be very unhappy not having a say in a passion shared by many more than you give credit to.

Build it and they will come!!

If there was the possibility of rain, I’d opt for my Akubra Country Club. It’s very light, it has a good sized brim, it can get wet without any issues, despite being polypropylene it’s cool wearing, and it looks good enough to be worn in any circumstance I might find myself.

I have done it myself in Ignacio's shop while I was waiting for him to finish other hats, Bill.
First thing you have to know is that, sometimes, there is a color difference between the surface felt and the deeper one, so that when you sandpaper the felt , and expose a deeper layer, the deeper one is darker, so you might end up with a more noticeable and wider "stain" on the felt than the moth divot was.
To find out if that is the case, I do it first on the underside of the brim.
I start with a pretty coarse grit, and once the divot is barely noticeable, I progressively go to a finer one.
The other thing you have to watch out for is not over-thinning or even perforating the felt.
I would also use grayish or black sandpaper on gray, blue, or black felt, and brown sandpaper for brownish felts. I feel that some of the resulting "stain" might be because sandpaper particles actually do stain the felt.

^^^^pouncing has always mystified me in hat finishing. I’ve often wondered what grit is used when and what type sanding strokes are used. I assume there is more to it than intuition.
Maybe some experts could enlighten us as to the basics. My common sense can be too common at times.

Those don't look too deep, Bill. They shouldn't be hard to eliminate. Start with an old beater, so you gain confidence. It worked for me.

When I convert western hats and cut the brims down I start with 500 grit and end with 1200. I don’t think that 1200 is necessary but I get a fine finish. I pounce those westerns a bit but I don’t think I’d take on a nice vintage or custom hat. 500 grit can remove a
Lot of felt fast. Maybe you can find a quality hat that’s a basket case and experiment.

Have you already tried a hat sponge? If the divots are light, you may not need to sand.

Normally I'd agree with DeadlyHandsome, but I just checked Hats Direct's website and didn't see the Country Club listed. So, yeah, Everything Australian is probably your best bet if they have your size in stock.
