There are some blue tones in certain light conditions, but it's definitely gray.

Desert Dog has a moonstone Campdraft with a cattleman's crease that looks great.

The felt 6X Open Road is a 100% fur felt hat with zero wool. Stetson beaver hats are rare and very expensive.

Just to throw another wrench into the works, consider a customer too. The VS off the rack hat is close to your price range and is much better in quality. A 100% rabbit fur custom Gannon (when he gets back to work after his injury) starts at $175! A true custom that will be orders of magnitude better than a Stetson or an Akubra if you can wait a few months for the build. Don't be intimidated ordering a custom as they walk you through the entire process and make sure you get just the hat you want.

To add to this monkey wrench, I'm waiting on my Royal Deluxe Open Road. I doubt it's going to be as weather resistant as the Akubras, but it is a different feel/felt than the stiffer 6X. As a minimalist-in-training, I endeavor to wear my Royal Deluxe hats in the weather (perhaps not pure downpours) and maintain the hat as necessary- I think it's part of the process to have a "liveable" tool and then take care of it accordingly.

If I wanted a pure "downpour" hat, I'd probably get a waxed leather or synthetic Outdoor Research type of hat- at the expense of style and tradition (referring more to the Outdoor Research synthetic).

But as I prefer tradition and a nod to nostalgia, I'll just get more acquainted with how to maintain my quality fur felts.

I only wanted a comparison of the OR for quality comparison purposes and to see how a 6x fur Stetson compared to 100% rabbit Akubra.

I doubt that they will go on sale. Most of them, and all the great ones, have more work then they can handle as it is with 2+ month backlogs. Not a lot of incentive to lower their prices.

Not a sale, per se, but Art use to give discounts if you donated a hat to his hats for the homeless project. Not sure if he's still doing that, but it's just once a year, I think.

At least two of my Akubras (maybe three, I don't remember) have gotten soaked by rainfall, and suffered no ill effects whatsoever; if anything, the rain made them a little softer. As long as you set yours aside after it gets wet and allow it to dry naturally at room temperature (i.e., don't try to dry it faster by using an artificial heat source) it should be fine. By the way, while it's wet it's also a good time to "tweak" the crown or brim shape if you want to.

An Akubra is on the wish list but I want to see one in person before I order something . I still would like to know why a Kroger cap is called a Kroger cap . I called Levine hats yesterday , I thought that since they sell a couple different Kroger hats and have been in business for at least 2 generations they would know where Kroger hats got there name . Nope, they don't know, I think it's just another name for a newsboy hat which isn't really a good name for an 8 panel either . I don't have one anyway although that is on the list . The cap I ordered from Poland wont be here until mid Feb so there wont be anything ordered for awhile . I don't like to wait on more than 1 thing at a time . The other thing is, we probably should be thinking about straw hats, spring isn't that far away.

One way to get around the cost of custom hat is to buy a used hat that has a good felt body and send it to a hatter for a renovation to your liking. Just a thought.

Levine is located downtown in St Louis and they have a diverse customer base as would be expected. I'm sure they have sold some of those leopard hats as well as some others that are just as interesting. Fun place to go actually, you will find a hat you need .

I've got a Stormy Kromer Cap , they make a few models and a bunch of colors , but they're nice and warm . When I worked out in MT , WY , and NE everybody wore one in the winter .

Does anyone have experience with the western hats Churchill made for Neiman Marcus as part of their Red River line? I bought a Churchill "Beaver 50" not long ago and it was a very high quality hat (just wish it fit me), but I don't know about this Red River hat. Any insights would be appreciated. The seller is asking top dollar so I want to know as much about it before I commit. Thanks in advance.

I bet somebody will know about Churchill Hats sold at Neiman Marcus . On you size issues buying Hats , find the dimensions inside the sweat of a Hat that fits you , front to back and side to side . I'm a 7 3/8 and my perfect fit is 8.25" X 6.5" . Add those measurements together and divide by 2 (8.25+6.5=14.75 divide by 2= 7.375[7 3/8]) that will give you the correct size of the Hat no matter what size you're told it is , you'll know .
