New Fedora Lounge member here. I have a question about the famous Poet Hat Herbert Johnson made for Harrison Ford to use as Indiana Jones. On Village Hat Shop, there's the Ford Fedora crushable hat. Is that a good affordable alternative fedora for that classic indy look?

To get a good looking Indy hat on a budget, I'd look up Garrison Hatters or Northwest Hats. I seem to recall Penman Hats having a lower cost version too.

I've yet to watch an Indiana Jones movie, Bob. I did watch the start of the original but thought it was boring and headed out instead. Love the Indy hats though [emoji3]

I like lots of Delks and Penman's work especially the crown blocking but really don't care for the Indy "turn" brim and the severe pinch extending down most of the front of the crown.

Agree, my favorites (of which I have a Penman and an Adventurbilt) are the Indy 4 hats, without the sharp pinch.

Penman is probably the maker of the finest Indy hat one can buy, as well as more affordable versions.

I'm a sucker for provenance though, and the relaunched Herbert Johnsons, with what is as best we know, the original blocks, look mighty nice. Not the cheapest, but, they do indeed fit the part.

As far as the Jaxon....if you're looking for a costume hat that you're not going to use with any regularity, sure, that works. If you think you'd wear a hat out and about, I'd highly recommend dropping a bit more on a proper hat (i.e. fur felt, and actual sizing). I actually like the Christy's Adventurer for the value category, something about their "sable" felt and crown feels right. Just don't wear it in the rain. If you are a size 7, drop me a line, you can take my old one off my hands.

Other options: Penman everyman, Akubra Federation VI, Stetson Fortune and Glory.

The Akubra always wins bang for buck, check out hatsdirect.com.

+1 on NW Hats. He just posted one on Facebook recently. His price is far, far less than a Penman.

go akubra and you get a felt hat that you can wear (for life) in the rain, although you'll need to squeeze the pinch yourself to properly indy it, unless hatsdirect offer that service, you could email them.

i'm not a fan of the indy pinch, probably due to it being a somewhat 'ubiquitous' or 'infamous' pinch. In a non-hat wearing city where even a trilby worn brim down garners 'hey cowboy' derogatory comments from jealous 'i'm a comedian' baseball cap wearers, the indy pinch would even still attract indy comments, known as such by every man under 50.

I have several "INDY"hats but I like them for the hat,not the relationship with the character.All of the above are good recommendations.If you happen to have a larger head,check out the ad by Christy's in the finds area below as posted by Rick Blaine.I snagged an Adventurer/Poet for $80 delivered to the US.
The Penman is still my favorite of all I own.

+1 I agree, it just shows the ignorance of the Great Unwashed about classic men's hats. They have seen the movies, and equate all fedoras with Harrison Ford. The above images are a far better example of a nice tight pinch (which I like) on a fine hat. We all need to educate the unhatted public by wearing them regularly.
