Depends on the condition of the hat...Is 40 dollars a lot to pay for a Stetson "Ivy League" from the early 50's?

Since you like the style, also look for Shady Brady brand straws.Do y'all have any idea where I could theoretically buy a Rodeo Drive Stetson?

I love the look of those straws with a dramatic curled brim.

Look at Western apparell websites, like Shepler's & Cavender's....

Looks like it's in mint condition if the pictures are accurate. It's a stetson Royal, not Royal deluxe.. does that matter?

Royal Deluxe is a step up over just Royal & means it initially cost more. The finish is nicer & components, like sweatband, are better leather....etc.
IMHO, any 1940's mint Royal Stetson is worth $40 if it is my size & a style I like.
How is the age being determined for this hat?
I was basing age off some of the conversations in this board about the Ivy League hat, according to a conversation some other members have, they believed that the early 50's model had the plastic protection in the top of the silk liner. The seller is also advertising it as 50's, but most of my reasoning was based off the conversation i read in one of the threads in here about dating the Ivy League hat.
Well... I bought it, I figured what the Heck, I'll take the risk.
Here's a link to the hat.

I found this out the hard way, trying to walk through an airport security scanner. Many Shady Brady straws, at least their westerns, have a wire in the outer edge of the brim, making them easy to shape, especially if you want something radical.
+1 but still worth $40 if it is mint plus your size & style in my book....Its a mid-60's at the earliest from size tag and brim.

There is a lot going on in this question.
First off there a view of "What is the going Rate for this type of hat?"
It is a tuff question to answer because some specific named hat styles may not come up much for sale. To establish a going rate you need a track record for it. You can try to track hats on Ebay maybe the specific ones and any other brands that are similar.
You need to know about things to compare quantitative items such as:
Condition & Quality levels, defects, and the cost of cleaning and repairs if needed.
Used and vintage are different than new. If it fits and does not need a lot of work and it is aa fur felt $40 is a bargain compared to new. Consider that a fur felt new will be $150 and up (way up) for factory made hats.
The other side has to do with what is it's value to you for yourself, if you want it - wat will your wallet tell you. If you're flush $40 is nothing if you're on a tight budget $40 maybe pushing it.
In buying you're usually well served by understanding what it is you're purchasing and not being driven by an emotional need.
When you're background is one of knowledge you'll be able to appraise and search out what are really good deals quite readilly.
Watching Ebay and the like may give some good insights as to going rates. In the hat section there are several first time hat buyer threads as well as some info about selling hats on ebay that will help build your knowledge level.
Good luck.
Thanks for all the great info, as for the hat, as long as it fits (which I won't know for sure till i get it) then it was definitely worth 40 bucks to me, I guess that's the real underlying driver behind a purchase, but it's always good to know when one is overpaying or getting a great deal.

I had one of those. Carmel colored straw with golden-orangey feathers. That hat lasted me over ten years and I wore it a lot.
Here it is in about 1991:
