Camp caps are becoming very popular as hip-hop stars wear them in magazines, but what is the hat style's history? I've seen ads for the style as early as the late 1940s, but I can't find information about their original use, popularity between the 1950s and now, etc. Here's a modern example (I can't seem to upload the image for some reason)

Any ideas?

Aha! That explains the sudden flood of newcomers to the Lounge asking about these caps, with particular interest in making them. They're also calling them 5-Panel caps. I've been extremely puzzled as to what was spurring this sudden interest, and now I have my answer. Thank you for that, and welcome to the Lounge!

As for your answer, I'm not sure anyone on the Lounge has much information on the history of this style. Out of everyone, perhaps Dinerman or rlk might know something, as their first-hand knowledge of headwear esoterica is perhaps the greatest. These caps are probably off most everyone else's radar around here.

After searching without success, I am going to post my question here - I am trying to determine what this type of western/cowboy crease is called? It is not a cattleman (wider at the back and comes to a point) and doesn't really seem to be a "quarterhorse." The felt hat is a 1970s 5X Resistol and the crown is original (I changed the brim only - 2nd photo). If the pictures don't fully show the style - it is much taller in front than the back, with a somewhat pinched front. I have seen it on a number of hats and it seemed to become popular in the late 1960s (I don't see it in earlier catalogs), but I cannot find anything that gives this style a name (assuming it has one).

Thanks!

The top one is similar to a moder Open Road but not the same. It is likely that the owner had customized it to his liking and moved past the original name / style.

There are similar caps that have a military styling the kids wear out htis way and have been wearing for several years. They probably snag that camp style as a close replacement that was not more of the same thing. The camp style was prevelant in hunting and outfitter catalogs in the past.

Robert,

I had a Resistol I sold awhile back that had that crease. The tag on the box and in the hat referred to the style as "Tycoon".

Thank you to everyone - my old catalog searches turned up nothing.

Glad my question answered yours! I don't particularly like the style (the newer iterations are dreadful, what with the prominent branding) but I have to do some research on it. Thanks for your input, and I hope some other users have additional experience.

Carboard Cutout inside of baseball hats

Does anyone know what that cardboard inside the front of a baseball hat it is called? Not the brim. Im talking about the one that helps keep the form until someone buys the hat and removes it themselves. Im looking to purchase some wholesale. If you guys have any links that would be great! :)

Hey everyone, Quick? Does anyone know what that cardboard cutout they put inside baseball hats before you buy them is called. They put it there to help keep the shape while they sit on shelves I guess. I need to purchase alot of them for some hats I'm making for my clothing brand. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks :)

Help with Identification

Hi, I'm trying to find some information on this hat. It is a size 7 1/2. It's has 2" brim 2 1/4" ribbon and a 4 1/4" crown. The box is original to the hat. The color is a chocolate brown. I'm new at buying hats. I could not let this one pass. It really caught my eye but it's too big for me... I'm a 7 1/4. There a 2 moth bites (top rear & brim rear) and a very small wear spot on the front brim. I'm trying to get the style and approx.year. The hat was originally purchased in Chicago. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a thread called "Dating a hat" or something like that - that will give you some insights.

Sometimes the sweatband has tags underneath it that have clues. The imprints and the logo styles of the liner may help. The box will help too.

Best to post a bunch of photos. See thread on How to post photos.

Looks like a Mallory after Stetson purchased them late 50's early 60's. The dates in the Mallory logo will help determine. But that is stingy brim Mallory for sure. If you like that you should should see some of the 40's Mallory's I have two a 15 and a 25 great hats. Shame that Stetson purchased them but then Hatco ended up owning all the big brand names.

Yes,Baskin had a few stores in and around Chicago. The box lid shows the locations. I heard later the name was changed to Mark Shale which is a high end clothing store.
