I generally like to wear my hats with the brim snapped down. I have noticed that, I think on all the hats I currently own, the brim in front looks like a beak, essentially - it curves downward in the front. I'd really like it to look like a sharp line and point, if that makes sense, like the hat below. Do I need to look for something different in hats, do something different in my snap? What am I missing? Thanks!

It sounds like you are describing a “hawk bill”. My Stratoliner’s had what you have described. I took a damp washcloth, an iron set on steam, and ironed the front of the brim. Even with the edge binding, I was able to achieve a brim like what you have pictured in your “stock” photo.

Might just try a good spritzing with water and give it some steam pull the front brim down into shape.

I am considering using some Red Mahogany shoe polish to slightly darken and change the tone of the Barramundi skin (it's a fish) hat band that came on my Akubra Banjo Peterson. Anyone have a reason why I shouldn't do this? Will the polish bleed on to the felt in the rain? I don't want to hide the light/dark variations in the band - will polish inadvertently make it more uniform?

I would think that the polish would make the band uniform in color. I’m not sure if the color would transfer to the felt, I would avoid using it.

A question for USN vets. I see modern high end repro woollen watch caps with a manufacturer’s label (space for name/rate) on the outside of the turn up. This seems odd and contrary to what I’d have expected (with the label hidden). What was the norm?

I just found this hat going for about $20 & it intrigues me. The seller hasn’t put a size up, so about to ask for that - most likely too small for me. Apparently it was purchased at 大黒屋帽子店 (Daikokuya boshiten)... I suspect you, @daizawaguy, may be able to tell me about the shop.

Will a hemp hat shrink (or can it be made to)? I got a Stratoliner Special Edition Hemp in my normal size (7-1/2), and it's really too loose even with some sizing strips under the band. But since it's a summer hat I haven't worn it outdoors and worked up a good sweat that might shrink at least the band. It's my first hemp hat, and I don't know if this is fixable or if I should sell it and get a size down.

I picked up a vintage Milan that was a 7 1/2 and fit like a 7 5/8....way too big on my 7 3/8+ head. I removed the leather sweat and cut it down by a good 1/2cm then I drummed the sweat a fair bit and carefully basted the sweat back on. I took the reeded part of the sweat and sewed it more outboard so it was laying partially on the brim. That put more of the reduced part of the sweat (the drumming) into play. I basted the sweat in first to make sure the milan could take up the reduction in the sweat and then did the final sewing. Now I have a Milan that fits without any shims at all.

That's very cool, but regarding my Stratoliner hemp, your solution sounds to me like a $300 effort for a $150 hat. I think you convinced me to buy the smaller size! I'll put my 7-1/2 Special Edition Navy in the classifieds.

It depends on your outlook/inclination. It cost me nothing and I had fun doing it...took about an hour and a bit.

I’d never do anything like that myself, but I appreciate quirkinesses. I like knowing there are odd folks out there doing odd things. I like that we aren’t all the same and some folks march to a very different beat than I do. As long as we all respect each other and don’t infringe on others’ rights I say good for them!
