No I don’t know the size. I’m sure that will be question number one tomorrow. I have a sizing tool so that will be answerable without any problem. I also usually avoid checkerboard liners. I try to buy 50s and earlier.

Due to availability, I’ve bought a few similar hats. If you go into it knowing what they are, and what they aren’t, and if the price is right, there are some keepers with that liner. I associate it with mid to late 1960s and later hats.

You are right, the liner, crests on the liner and sweatband, the sweatband color all point to this being a potentially nice hat but outside of the range of what is normally considered the good era for vintage hats, probably 60s.

You can let us know how it turns out, I’d be curious. I automatically turn off to hats with black sweatbands and that Stetson ‘swoosh’ crest.

A friend just sent me these three photos. He is bringing me the hat tomorrow to look over. I’m thinking 1960s. It’s newer than any vintage hat I own. Any help would be much appreciated. I don’t know if he’s wanting to sell but what should I tell him?

For searches on the Lounge I use google with this additional text in the search field:

site:thefedoralounge.com

That limits your search to the Lounge.

Here's my question because a lot of times the search bar isn't really that useful: Are there any threads that pertain to straw hats that aren't specifically Panamas or Milans? I love to look at the hats people post, but some days I prefer to see specific types. If anyone can point me to a couple of links, I'd appreciate it

Thanks

Looking for a weatherproof summer hat. I’ve heard people say Sunbody, while incredibly durable are heavy and hot. I think it was you, Brent @deadlyhandsome that mentioned hemp as an option. Just how weatherproof are the Akubra hemp range?

shangtung, being a plastic coated paper "straw", is somewhat water resistant, but I wouldn't offer it as "weatherproof" per se. For something like that, a Tilley seems to be a popular option.

Hemp should do well if you get caught in a shower, but I’m not sure I’d repeatedly soak it. The Range is a hat that can survive some rain without damage, but it’s not a rain hat. I have a Mountain Hardware and an Outdoor Research (OR) hats for when out in serious rain. Otherwise, and umbrella is a nice option to have.

Thanks for the replies. Good food for thought. I’m not looking for storm wear, more something I can wear for a visit to Osaka or wherever when the forecast is for inclement weather.

Another option might be foldable straw - any suggestions for a reasonably priced collapsible hat?

The great aspect of making your own stiffener is you get to decide on the strength. I have been experimenting using brim cuttings. Take a decent sized cutting and put the shellac on one half leaving the other half natural. Then you can see exactly what level of stiffening you have.....I have a sealed jar with shellac dissolved but a fairly strong concentration. I use the strong mixture in small doses to boost up the mixture I use on the hats. As well, it depends on how heavy a hand you use when applying it. I think it is an experiment in 'feel'.

I bought the SuperBlonde as it was the clearest I could get. I have used the premixed stiffener previously and when I mixed my flakes I tried to approximate that colour. The solution I used does have a slight yellow tinge to it....like really weak pee but even on a very light grey felt there is no colour residue. I use a 2" wide throwaway brush to apply.

Thanks. I was searching the FL recently and found a thread on hat stiffeners. I was curious what you were using. I note Major Mike Moore seems to recommend a clear liquid resin, which I'm looking into, as well.

I have used a pre mix that you can buy from a millinery supply store in Portland OR but it comes in a gallon jug. It has the slightly yellow tinge to it. I cannot remember where I read it but the Super Blonde is considered to be very close to the Clear.

Jim, I use the Bulls Eye Clear cut with alcohol and I’ve only applied it to a felt once but numerous times on straws. I posted somewhere around TL about it.

Thanks, guys. I was looking at the Super Blonde on Amazon, it does appear the lightest. Right now, I want to use it on a light tan Alexander, so I'm being cautious.
