Howdy, friends! I picked up this Stetson today at an antique store and I’m trying to date it. Kind of an Open Road or Stratoliner style, but it doesn’t say so. No size tag either. Any ideas? I’m searching through all the old date your Stetson threads here on the Lounge but a lot of the picture links don’t work anymore. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

I just recently upgraded from an iron/boiler system for steam to the Reimers JR06 steamer. It was used originally for medical cleaning so it came with a steam gun attachment, not the foot switch and steam funnel. I got around to upgrading to a foot activated solenoid so right now I can fire steam out of 1/4” diameter pipe after the solenoid. The problem is the steam is... cold? It’s probably steam right when it exits the pipe but I’m guessing it turns to water vapor quickly. Can anyone help troubleshoot it? Do professional hat steamers need to be “hot” steam or is it water vapor that’s more important?

It is largely the heat then combined with the wet. When I want to reform a hat I first give it a good misting with a dollar store spray bottle then hit it with steam from my Rowenta hand steamer. The steam comes directly, not travelling any distance down tubing, so will burn the hand if hit with it. I love this steamer as it produces good volume. The downside is the reservoir is small and as it produces large volumes of steam I have to refill it more often than I would like.

Steam isn’t visible and it’s not until it becomes liquid in the form of vapor that you can see it. I’d guess that your “steam” is hot enough to do what it’s supposed to do.

Like Belfastboy, I usually mist the hat before hitting it with steam. I use a spray bottle made for the hairstylist trade and it comes out as a very fine mist. I’ve used various steamers with mostly good results. A couple of months ago I bought a Jiffy Commercial hat steamer from Art Fawcett that I really like. It works like as the smaller unit but the reservoir is larger.

Hello, I work with Panama hats, I have consulted within my country and there is no one who makes blocks for hats, I usually do this process in machines but with this pandemic I would not like to depend on renting these machines. Does anyone have any books or information about the dimensions of a block of hats, according to the model and everything else? I plan to do it with a local artisan, there are people who sell them on the internet but it is more convenient for me to make them in Ecuador.

Any information would be useful to me, I have not found anything about it to make them. I think that the people who make them should have some guide to give the most suitable dimensions. Thanks in advance.

You probably know this already but in case not. Randal Alan on Etsy uses a 3D printer to make his. If you check out Guy Morse Brown Hat Blocks on Etsy and on their website he has a video that shows him making a hat block. With him it is pretty much an entire hand made, hand carved item....hence the expense. It is like sculpting wood rather than marble or molding clay.

Hello, thank you.

I was looking for information to make them in collaboration with a local artisan, maybe a scheme or something similar, because I haven't found anything about it. But I could ask for a few blocks as an example and they will serve as a guide to do the rest. I've seen those sellers before, they have a good reputation, I was thinking of making a purchase of a few blocks, but I wanted to try another way of doing it.

Hello TFL members,

I've read that some hatters use heating lamps as a source for warming up sand in the sandbagger. Any thoughts on what might be the right one for the task?

Here's my question because a lot of times the search bar isn't really that useful: Are there any threads that pertain to straw hats that aren't specifically Panamas or Milans? I love to look at the hats people post, but some days I prefer to see specific types. If anyone can point me to a couple of links, I'd appreciate it

Thanks

We have The Panama Hat thread, Milan Mania, and The Sunbody Association. I'm not aware of any others, specifically. What other types are you looking for. Parabuntals, etc. seem to get roped in with the Panama hat thread.

If you're interested in seeing some things out there for sale, maybe check some dealers, such as The Panama Hat Company in St. Augustine, FL (mypanamahat.com). They carry several different brands and varieties. Also check Panama Hats Direct.
