I'll be talking to the fellow at JJ Hat Center in NYC on Monday, they said they could do the work but the actual repair man wasn't in. They've been around since 1911 so they should have a pretty good idea as to what's involved.
It was stupid to wear a hat that day as the gusts were brutal - I even had my hand on the side brim and the wind just whipped it right off and out of my grasp.
It may sound strange but I owe it to this hat to get it fixed, you know? It spent 90 years in perfect condition and then I come along and instantly trash it.
I'm glad to know that there are still craftsmen around with the skills to do it right.

Can anyone recommend a shop for replacing the brim edge ribbon on a 1920s/1930s bowler? It was windy as can be today and my beautiful bowler was wrenched from my head and hand and bounced down the road.
I'm just sick about it.
The rest of the hat came through just fine but the edge ribbon got beat up on both the front and the back of the brim.
I'm in the Northeast here in Central Pennsyltucky.
So sorry to hear about the damage to your Bowler, Steve. I hope JJ Hatters or some others can repair the binding. Back in the day, ca. 1920s, the Manchester hatters found the solution to windy weather. This one will never blow away.

The spot where the hat took sail is like a wind tunnel, I've actually had a motorcycle get blown off the side stand there. I think you'd need Gorilla Glue and some staples to keep a hat on your head.
The bowler is boxed up and goes off the JJ Hat Center this upcoming weekend. Brim binding, new liner, tax and return shipping will run $94.50. I owe it to the old thing to fix it back up.
I'll post some pics of the repair, I figure a month turnaround time.
I'm very grateful that there are still people around who can tackle this kind of stuff.

I guess this is the correct thread for this.
I found a very interesting hat at an antique store in December. It had recently come in and was utop a display case, rather than on display, and had no price tag.
I took it to the counter and was told it was a new arrival, and the owner, who wasn't there (apparently more than one seller operates out of the store) hadn't priced it yet. I left my number and got a voicemail a week and a half later.
The price was too rich for my blood these days, but it's a fascinating hat and case.
Collectors around here might consider it a find. I went back and took pictures.
Would anyone like me to try to negotiate a purchase for them?
The asking price is $500, but the VM said everything is negotiable.
I wear 7 1/8 and it's a little small on me. I'd say 6 7/8 or a tight 7.
The case is very hard leather, almost like rawhide. No key for the lock :).
Pm me.

Interesting indeed Steve, but way over priced unless it has some serious provenance.
Can't quite read the hat liner. Who's the maker?
Super shaped case.

I'll have to go back and take notes. I suspect the high price was tossed out just because of my early interest, but it is tagged at $495 right now. I don't think it is going to run out of the store at that price.
At $150 I'd have grabbed it and suffered the wrath of wife. At $300 I think it's worth considering. $500 surprised me, as I landed another hat there at a very reasonable price the day I first saw it.
It's a very sleek beaver, and the case is custom made for the hat, which is beautifully preserved after being cased all its life.
My cash flow doesn't allow me to hold it right now, so I don't even want to jawbone down the price if I can't back my play.

$150 definitely worth buying, Steve. $300 would still need evidence of some fairly serious provenance. Previous owner, hatmaker, casemaker, vintage, beaver, moleskin, or silk and so on.

Anyone familiar with Hobart Hats? I was given this yesterday at worship services. It was found in the house of an elderly female member who passed away. I believe it belonged to her late husband but don't know for sure. I'm gonna move it on but thought I'd see if anyone has history on the company etc.
Brim: 1 1/2" with 1/4" overwelt
Ribbon: 1 5/8" brown

I found some similar hats and cases on the Bay today, using picclick. Apparently this isn't as unique as I assumed.
One ad claims cir. Civil War. Does that sound likely?

We'd need to see photos, Steve. Top hats were very popular around that time, so it's possible.

Hi guys, got this beater Knox Premier from Ebay and I want to know if this hat was originally a Homburg.

Thank you

Hard to say for sure, but given the asymmetric brim binding possibly. That being said, not all brim bindings on fedoras was symmetrical, so you can't go by that alone. Does the brim seem stiffer than a "normal" fedora?

Also, that looks to be a 40s factory tag. That's probably some nicer felt for a beater. Good get, Héctor!

Thanks! No, the felt on the brim area is very pliable and when placed brim up, is not rolled or stiff like a Homburg.

I was curious because of the thickness of the binding in the underside of the brim. Thank you for your response.[emoji106][emoji106]
