Another question regarding the Stetson Chatham's. Mine is 12 years old and is a Sovereign in brown. I was searching for a new one in grey. I've noticed that the new versions are now Royal Deluxe.

Are the Royals more or less flexible than the Sovereign's?? ie, snap brim factor?

Sorry for all the questions. I used to take my Stetson to Delmonico's hatter once a year or so to get it steamed, cleaned and stiffened for free. But the gentleman who did the work passed away. . They no longer have anyone who does that type of thing. All they'll do is a quick steaming, no deep cleaning or resetting of the brims shape. So now, I'm trying to learn how to do it myself.

The Royal and Royal deluxe qualities were reintroduced a few years ago by Matt Deckard. I don't know for sure, but I am presuming that the felt mixes were tinkered with to his specifications, hence the re-naming. As best I can recall about my Sovereign Temple that I once owned and sold many years ago, the Royal deluxe felt is slightly thinner and slightly more flexible.

Is it possible to take some of the curl out of a bound edge brim? The hat is a vintage 1960 Resistol similar to an Open Road and I really like the hat. I would like it better if it didn't have so much droop when worn brim down and not so much swoop when worn snapped. Any ideas short of removing the binding?

Ahh...don’t remove the brim binding!
I’ve had plenty of success just ironing the brim flat with a steam iron. It reinvigorates the stiffeners and behaves much better. Just put a cloth or towel on top and don’t touch the ribbon much. Simple and easy works well sometimes!

Ps: now that i think about it i’ve done the same with droopy straws.

Hi All,
I am wondering if someone can tell me more about this hat? I bought it in a charity shop years ago, it needs a clean. 20190808_131452.jpg 20190808_131400.jpg I tried looking in the sweat band to find more information, but there is nothing. "Legendary hats Since 1865" leads me to believe it is fairly recent. Looked on the Stetson Website and can't find it there. If you could give me any insight I would appreciate it.

I wouldn't know the model name but it is wool.

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the right place for this question but will give it a go.
I am from NZ and curious about a vintage resistol hat that my grandfather owned. He passed away many years ago now, but I remember always had a lot of hats.
He was born in 1908, and did a lot of travel from the 40s-60s, and had a real love for the USA and all things American.
After having a look through this site I think this hat is probably made in the 1950-60s, which is around the time my grandpa would have been visiting the USA. Clearly a dress hat, and I'm guessing a fedora?

There is no original box with it, so that can't help us, it's actually in a stetson box at the moment.
Can anyone tell me more about it? It really looks practically unworn, he has had his initials printed on the sweat band, and they look almost unmarked.
Obviously it is out of shape after sitting in a box untouched for many years.
My father has it sitting around (it's too small for him) but is my size exactly, so I may start wearing it occasionally.
Also any advice on how I can restore it's shape? Ideally I'd like to find some pictures of what it should look like in proper condition and shape.
Thanks!
I believe I have the same hat at home. I'll post pictures for you tonight.
You probably have a tea kettle around, so should be able to reshape it pretty fast.

I just used this for the first time.

Worked pretty good and I'm sure I'll get better as I use it more. But I got this Montecristi from Art Fawcett with a small curl on the brim. I was outside in a mist and the curl went away. I also wanted more of a curl. I knew I wouldn't be shipping out hats to get the curl restored so I looked for a solution I could do in house. Anyway, for a first attempt it think it went pretty well.

Below is the link for the Etsy store where I bought this.

That's the one I saw in use on YouTube and plan to "imitate".

View attachment 179709 HI, Found this in my local antique shop, a beat up vintage aluminium block that is electric with small steam outlet holes.
It’s made by Frank Spieler in Frankfurt and appears to be supplied by Reslaw in London.
I’ve never seen one, does anyone have any info on these and an approximate date please? It’s a cool piece, quite pricey but still considering buying it :)
They go for about $175 minimum on eBay lately.
