I've decided that I need a fuzzy collar!
I bought a dark grey-brown 50s Mouton jacket on eBay, and now I want to ask you all who should make the collar?
I might try to make a version myself for my Bates, but if I do it for the Ralphs-Pugh I'll want it professionally done and fitted (it also needs seam repairs and sleeve reinforcing). Maybe Johnson...Please give me your suggestions.

Johnson uses snaps to secure the fur collar. It will stay in place very good but the snaps bugs my neck when I take the fur off. Using snap caps works but I keep breaking them when I take them off. So makes me think the best way would be another small leather leather strip with blind snaps at the back and it would snap in place when the fur is not being used. Will try that down the road.

For non motorcycle jacket I’m leaning towards buttons. I will try to do one myself by sewing buttons onto the lining.

I think the trick is to have the fur collar cover the entire collar with enough extension into the lining of the jacket to stay secure.

I was just looking at a vintage cross zip on eBay that has a removable fleece/Borg/Sherpa/wev collar.

I love it and my brain had decided to buy it already, before I realised that I have just actually bought a cross zip that's perfect - and all I need to do is make/buy a collar to go on it.

Who has done/paid for this to happen to one if their jackets? Mrs Barnabus is pretty handy with a sewing machine, is it worth trying ourselves or is this a professional job?

Or do I just stop the CR madness and walk away knowing I’ve completed this level?

I would keep it as is. It's fun seeing something other than the j100 style back. Every self respecting repro maker does the j100.

intrigued. So she would do a transplant of the back from the one jacket to the other? Otherwise I think it'll look funny with the kidney panel, etc. if you only do the top part.

When I had my brooks, instead of replacing the elastic, I had a tailor slim up some of the excess material and sew down the whole action back. Dramatically changed my opinion of the jacket and just made it fit better. But it was a tad big to start with, so I could afford to bring it in. Obviously you cant do this if you need the extra reach of the gussets.

the problem with the full action backs is they don't age well. It's pretty easy to swap out the elastic, but it doesn't help with the "puffiness" that develops over time. I guess if you're not maxing out the seams it's less of an issue though.

If it doesn’t work out you’d ruin to beautiful jackets that are not that easy to find again.
I’d leave it alone and keep both. Double the joy.

I wouldn't take that risk, why submit a perfectly healthy jacket to surgery?

Think of that back as a feature, a feature that makes this jacket what it is

This is probably not the right place to ask... but can anyone offer a bit of guidance on the cost and/or level of effort to repair a jacket with issues like this one has? ie. minor-ish tears in the lining that are perhaps mendable and the main zip damage? or, for that matter, other similar / common issues with vintage jackets?

Also, is it not advised to attempt these sorts of repairs DIY? Not too sure about how clean of a job I could do on these types of repairs independently. I do sew, for what it's worth, (both machine and hand) but the quality of my work I'd assess as more functional than immaculate.

This particular jacket is in rough shape. The lining on these is silk, and comes apart often at the neckline, so that is pretty common. The zipper is trickier to fix, and should be sent to a knowledgeable repair person. The leather on the shoulders and upper back area is where I'd feel concerned. For the asking price, I've seen better Kehoe jackets.

Can this jacket be brought back to the original pattern? From the photos it looks like it’s been altered on the seam between the arm pit and the waist. I really want one of these White Label One Pocket Harley cafe racer jackets!! Too cool!!

The owner is asking $180. I was gonna offer $100. Just not sure if it’s worth the work. Also don’t know if when that extra material was added to let out the jacket, did that do irreparable damage to the original pattern.

I called San Diego Leather and from my description he thought it might cost $125 to fix but he had to see it to be sure.

Just would appreciate any insight from the crew here at TFL. I have been pouring over this site for the last three weeks and absolutely love it!! You folks that are regular contributors have already helped me buy my first Cal Leather jacket!!! TFL is a great great resource for “new in towns” like me. Thanks to all of you!!
