This is a stupid question, so I apologise in advance, but is there a particular name for this kind of curled fringe?

... and to do it I assume you set your fringe, then when you brush it out, curl it back round and pin it?

I don't know the answer to that i'm afraid, but i adore Imelda May's hair. I have done my hair like that when i had a long fringe and i pretty much did just that, i did some standing up pincurls and then just brushed it out, then curled it round and pinned it.

How about a pompadour roll? If someone said to me that they had styled the front in a pomp roll, or a rolled pomp, this is what I would visualize!

In the deep dark past of this thread, I believe Kitty T mentioned that one can use sponge curlers on layered hair to replicate pincurls. Does anyone have advice? Or some setting pattern photos to look at? I can't figure how to roll the roller -- with the pin curl they lay flat and horizontal against the head, but with the rollers they will lay perpendicular -- correct? Maybe pointing up and down like one would hold a curling iron for a "spiral curl"?

Random question, How many pin curl clips on average do you all use?
I want to finally get round to getting some, but not sure how many. I know they come in packs of 10 or 12 in Supedrug.
(sorry if its been mentioned before, couldnt find it if it has been.)

I use about 30 and that's my sloppy set. 40 when I'm being meticulous. My hairstylist used 150 the last time she did a pin curl set. I just don't have the time or patience for that - it took her 1 1/2 hours.

Anyone? Anyone? I want to try this tonight or tomorrow.

Have you seen this? http://jennyjenny-yesterdaygirl.blogspot.com/2011/02/getting-set.html

I have a question also. How do you ladies get your sets to stay in place? I always have trouble keeping the curls in a uniform sort of look--after about 20 minutes they bounce right back up into ringlets, which look nice, but that's not what I'm going for. Can anyone help? Do I just need to do more brushing?

I've always found that the smaller the pincurl, the tighter the curl. Try larger pincurls. It may give you the softer look you want without brushing the heck out of your hair to pull down the curl.

You are absolutely correct. To replicate a pin curl with a sponge roller the roller should be set so that it is perpendicular to the part (in the front, it's reversed at the back of the head). Personally, I don't set my sponge rollers perpendicular to the part because it gives too much volume. Setting the sponge roller so that it is parallel to the part creates a looser wave that easily lays flat against the head.

So, perpendicular=volume, parallel=no volume at the scalp.

Thanks, that went up just in time.
I would try either more brushing or larger pin curls -- it depends on your hair. Sadly, everything works differently for different people.

Thanks so much. I would think parallel would "bump" up the hair more, but I'll try that. It seems I end up with much more 50's hair than 30's, kinda boofy and the ends flip up. Drives me nuts.

That happens to me too. It's either too much brushing or too big rollers/pin curls. Or a combination of the two.

BTW, in your avatar you look like Parker Posey. I'm wondering if you get that a lot. Love your makeup in that shot.

Sorry to ask again, so parallel to the part would be as Yesterday's Girl has her curlers in in this shot:

and perpendicular would be how she rolled the bangs i guess.

If you missed it before, these shots are from Yesterday's Girl's blog.

The way Jenny (Yesterday Girl) sets her hair is exactly how I set mine, except I use rollers one size smaller. That picture illustrates the parallel/perpendicular setting variations very well. Do post a photo of your finished hairstyle, jetgirl!

Oh, and thanks for the compliment!

Not getting the hang of pin curls

I did a pin curl set last night and am unhappy with the results this morning. :( On the one hand, I managed to control frizz pretty well (used end papers). On the other hand, I hate how the curls lay. I've watched video after video on YouTube that say roll your hair this way, roll it that way, to get that S curve wave, or to get a reverse wave at the forehead. Something besides what I keep getting, which is this:

Oops pincurls

It seems no matter which direction I roll the pin curls, the front does this weird curl you see right above my glasses in the photo above - a curl facing up, or sometimes with manipulation, a curl facing toward my face but with the base turned funky.

The sides were rolled toward my face, but I'm doing something wrong in the brushing because I end up with a pageboy curl every time. Nothing wrong with that, just not what I'm going for. I've tried rolling all toward my face, alternating rows of toward face and away from face, and still get the same thing. Brushing longer gives me hair with no real discernible waves - almost like full of body, lots and lots of curls that sort of open up and end up looking like a big bush (not frizzy, just big). The hairs blend in with one another but don't fall into a wave pattern like I want them to. WHAT am I doing? How do I get this:

Gene Tierney
or...

Lana Turner

If you find out, let me know! The same thing happens to me...it's part of the reason I don't do pincurls.

Tatum, do you have a cow lick that you might be working with or against? I've just realized my problems might be the cow lick I've got on the right side of my hairline. I've resisted parting with the cow lick because it's unnatural feeling to me having had my hair on the other side so long! But tonight I started playing around with my hair and put hot sticks in. I started to style it again the same way with my part on the left and the front started doing the same thing. Ugh. So what the heck, I parted it on the opposite side and whadyaknow...it's not ideal but I'm getting closer. Do ya think?

Now I need to try this with pin curls.

(Gee I need lipstick here and better bathroom lighting. I'm thinking this style makes me look old. Hey, wait...) :p
