Lisa, these are great! I just radically chopped off my hair so now I think it will be a lot easier to pin curl.

One suggestion - more light! When you come in close to the camera, it gets darker, and there's no detail visible at all. And in part 2, where you go out where there is more light, it is almost as bad because you have a window behind you backlighting you. You might want to get a clamp-on work light that you can position wherever...

Other than that, very inspirational! And I love the music!

Thanks dear. Believe me, I've had those suggestions...many MANY times. But I can only work w/ what I have. I have tried clamp on desk lamps (I use it in my makeup videos, which is great, but it does nothing for hair at all-actual makes it darker) , florescent lighting, daylight...nothing seems to make a difference. If someone could perhaps instruct me how to set up a studio so that the hair details show up on camera, that would be great...but so far nothing has worked. I tend to think that it is the integrated webcam that is at fault..so until I can invest in a better one, these will have to do.

I have some vintage ones and they do not work with my chin to just past my shoulder length thick hair. Even grabbing less hair it was just too long for those little things to hold.

I think they might work on fine and/or shorter hair.

I must say that their "results" photo on that page is heinous. Are they trying to sell their product or throw cases of them in the dumpster at the end of the fiscal year? But the device seems so nifty! Probably wouldn't work on my hair either, too long and thick.

Finally done a full set!

It has been ages of looking up stuff, fiddling around, watching tutorials, etc, but I have finally done it. A full pin curl set that is. I have done a couple of sets with rollers and pin curl/roller combos with varying results. I finally got enough clips to do my whole head and found some Lottabody.

It took me about an hour, about the same amount of time as a roller set took. Since it isn't any quicker, I will probably stick with pin curls since I can really see the difference. Much better for my hair.

I am trying for the horizontal wave/Rita Hayworth look. We shall see what happens in the morning. You have no idea how excited I am to have figured all this out. All my life I have lusted after 40s hair but assumed I was so styling challenged I could never do it. I still need lots of practice, but I am on my way.

I will try to figure out how to post pics of the end result, even if it turns out badly.[huh]

No way in a million years I could have figured it out without FL! Yay FL!

how to wrap end papers

Hi all,

I have read through this entire thread and looked around in others, but can't find what I am looking for. Everything I find just says "use end papers", but not how to actually use them. I have used end papers when I use sponge rollers and I think I should use then when I pin curls too (Miss Frizzy). I have trouble using them and I think there must be something I am missing.

When I use them with rollers, I fold it in half over the strand and slide it up to the end and roll it up. Should the papers be folded up a couple times or is in half okay?

Now, my big problem with pin curls is that I have SO much breakage (really fine, thin hair) that rolling it up from the end is hard, even when wet. So, I do my curls holding one finger close to the root and wrapping around with the other finger, then slide it off and pin. I can't quite figure out how to use end papers when I roll them up this way. It seems I would have to fold the paper up a few times to keep it from coming off before the curl is formed.

Also, how does the paper sit within the curl? It seems to me that the paper is so much bigger (wider) than the curl that it wouldn't sit properly when it is clipped. Do you fold the paper up more (around the strand more)? Does anyone have a pic of a set with end papers they would be willing to share? Or a vid tutorial?

breakage from all this brushing

Now, on to my next dilemma.

As mentioned above, I have really fine, thin naturally curly hair that breaks super easy. Normally, I avoid brushing it as much as possible to avoid breaking it. But I am loving the pin curls! That involves lots of brushing.

I did my first full pin curl set the other night and it sure looked fab! But, my hair takes curl really well, so it needed lots of brushing to get it down to a still quite fluffy curly state. I am worried that doing these styles is going be murder on my hair. I have 2 what I think are boar bristle brushes from Goody. Will the type or quality of brush make much of a difference with how much breakage I get?

A sponge roller set doesn't need quite the same level of brushing, but it also doesn't give the same result as the pin curls.

I know I need to get it cut (it is about shoulder blade length now) and that will help. Things really thin out as we get to the ends. That said, if I were to cut it to remove all the little flyaway bits that have broken off, I would be bald. I have no illusions of ever getting a truly smooth style with this hair. Some flyaways are inevitable.

So, any tips from my fellow achy-breaky hair ladies?

I'm having a similar problem and my hairdresser gave me a lecture tonight - I need protein and moisture. I'm using a great conditioner but its got no protein in it. Apparently using both helps slow down breakage.

I'm definitley having more luck with pincurl clips than with bobby pins - they're less dented now! I used a curl cream as well as my setting lotion and it made really nice curls - they lasted really well the whole day, although they'd fallen out by the next morning... I think maybe it made my hair a bit too oily. I need to find a better balance!

Anyone got any tips on making your pincurls more shiny? Mine are always a bit dull-looking xx

Since hair is made of protein, it's important to keep it reinforced. You can buy a spray to help renourish it's protein level. Redken has an entire series dedicated to protein treatments. Moisturizing your hair will reduce frizz and make it manageable, but not a complete fix for damage.

I just pincurled my head and boy, are my arms tired.

I will take pics of the set in the morning before I comb out, and after...

I put a couple of waves on the front sections, then pc'd the rest of the head. We shall see.. I am a novice at the pc thing. IT TOOK FOREVER. About 40 minutes compared to 10 minutes max with the Caruso. But probably the set will last longer.

I used Lottabody. I wish it was a little stickier - the ends tend to get all separated (and I haven't tried the endpaper thing yet, it was too much at once - like trying to learn to drive on a stickshift instead of an automatic!).

So I wonder, is there a product that is curl enhancing, shiny-making, and kind of waxy or sticky that would be good for setting with? Lottabody is just sort of slippery and slimy.

These pincurls were really small, but after brushing relaxed way too much. Now I have scrunched some curly gel into them which is helping.

It's a LOT more trouble than it is worth for me - the Caruso steam curlers give me a better curl, shinier hair, and in only 10 minutes! But, I tried.

HELP!

so last night I tried navet_confit's setting pattern using pin curls and sponge rollers. This is the first time that I have done pin curls and it was a disaster!

The ends were so frizzy and messy compared to the sponges and I can't figure out how to do them neatly or what way to roll when using a pattern pattern. Can one of the experts please do a step by step for pin curls with a pattern?

I've watched Lisa's but couldn't see enough detail and I can't find anything that shows something like - when the pattern is "this" you start like "this", continue like "this" and end like "this".

My hair was towel dried and I used a setting lotion (Wavol) which I think is the Aust. version of Lottabody.

It was such a huge mess!
