I've enjoyed this thread immensely recently--especially discovering those early twentieth century Western painters.
It occurred to me today that my favorite comic growing up, Tintin, has great hats in every book. So I thought it would be fun to cull through those again and snap pics of the best hats.
These are from Tintin and the Picaros. Published in 1976.

I find it interesting that many paintings have variations in the subjects. Whether the original artist explored the same subjects in various ways, or later artists doing their own version of the original.

I didn't see a "Hats Featuring Artwork" thread so I'll post this here.

I'm pretty excited to have won a Goodwill auction for this "hat featuring artwork" from several well known cowboy and western artists of the last half-century. From what I've been able to research this was from the first Charlie Russell Ride on the Circle Bar Ranch in Montana where artists and art enthusiasts gathered for a week-long ride following the path that Charles M. Russell took through the Little Belt Mountains.

One of the two surviving artists, Harley Brown stated in a reply to my query:

"I’ll say that the Russell Ride was a good group of individuals along with a few Western artists getting together for close to a week and once a year. We rode horses and talked about life. A very uplifting time. We loved many of the the traditions of the old West. —— I see the hat does have those sketches we artists often did for members; it’s a treasure as you know. You have made a great buy with that hat. Plus it is in many ways historic.
The gathering was a good number of individuals who wanted to get together in Montana, relax, eat great meals and talk about the world."

I did find a couple of similar pieces. This was a leather "hide" signed by the artists on the Cowboy Artists of America Trail Ride from 1975. This was a similar ride, but more exclusive to artists. This sold for $2000 in 2017.

This was a hat from the 1988 CAA ride (with some of the same artists on my hat). This sold for $1200 in 2012 (better hat and for a famous movie cowboy).

Stamped inside the headband "Especially Made for Rex Allen", this 20x beaver hat features drawings by John Hampton (1918-1999), Michael Coleman (b 1946), Harley Brown (b 1939), R Brownell McGrew (1916-1994). Superb condition, c 1988

The Arizona Cowboy is one of only a handful of silver screen cowboys who actually came from a cattle ranching background. He learned to ride almost as soon as he could walk, and helped with the livestock and ranch chores before and after school. From early childhood, music filled the Allen house. His dad played the fiddle and Rex learned to play a Sears and Roebuck mail-order guitar to accompany him at dances. Wherever and whenever possible, the boy would sing and at 12, had a fine bass voice that spanned three octaves. For awhile, young Allen considered competing professionally in rodeos, but found riding a two thousand pound bull was quite a different story from the steers he’d conquered locally. Music was undoubtedly more rewarding and definitely a lot safer. But he never lost his love for the rodeo and its bronc and bull riders, many of whom became good friends.
