I've been trying to learn the art of flintknapping for several yrs. Still not very good, I think I need to take some private lessons, & buy a kiln. The season for knap-ins will be starting soon.

I've been trying to learn the art of flintknapping for several yrs.
Here's a piece of chert with some color I started last fall. I'll probably go ahead & finish it up for the experience but I've already screwed it up by not thinning it down enough before starting to taper the sides. Now as I try to thin it the piece will continue to get narrower & somewhat smaller so it will have to end up something small like a bird point.

Were you in Afghanistan then?

No, just a little project about the 1980s that we did recently. It is like a tribute or something. I remember seeing those TV clips in the 80s about Afghanistan and the western support to the tribes and thinking as a teen back then "this ain't good". Coming from a military family I identified with the Russians and not the tribal Afghans.
