He also appears to be wearing a down-filled nylon vest, more "modern cowboy" than "old west". But he still looks more "right" than the tall gent on the far right--something about his attire screams "costume" to me.

AL, I spotted the puffer vest on that cowboy as well. Considering it's a 1982 photo, that's about appropriate for the time. The cowboy on the right, I'm afraid he's so tall and gangly, no matter what he wears may look costumey.

A little research showed that these are buckaroos from the T Lazy S Ranch in northern Nevada.
