Winchester felt isn’t consistent as some felts are reasonably soft and not overly firm and some are quite stiff. The good news is that the stiff dress weight felt tends to soften with use.

The search for better hat bodies is what makes FEPSA beaver felt so appealing to those who have tried Winchester’s offerings.

My Glacier was a bit stiffer than previous hats from Art and other local-to-me hatters (NW Hats, Penman, Gannon). I just assumed it came from Winchester that way. Even so, it took a dry crease (without steam) very well and I see no need to add steam to set the crease as with previously purchased hats made from Winchester felt.

I only have one Northwest 100% beaver and it was/is the stiffest dress hat I have. There isn’t much in the way of consistency with Winchester.

Art retired the end of last year. David Gibson has had his own custom hat shop and has done most of Art’s repair/service/refurbishment work for some time. Art put VS up for sale and eventually David took it over. I have several hats that David has done the repair work on and his quality is great. Last year I also commissioned two new custom hats from David and the quality of work is what we expect from hats made by VS. The only fly in the ointment is that David’s current wait time is quite long.
