Prof, what you need to do to make your older hats fit like your VS is ask Art to get you one of his bandblocks.

This will be the shape of your head, made from the conformer you sent in.

I have one and use it all the time - if a hat is a little tight, a few days on the bandblock and it is perfect.

+1. The band block is awesome. I use it on all my hats. Like David said, eventually a custom fit is going to shrink some and feel tight. One night on the band block and it is good as new!

Very slick hat by the way! Looks great with the coat and tie.

I love that Art uses conformers, I think I have a fairly asymmetric + long oval head, no factory made hat I've ever bought has fit comfortably, even after months of wear, but Art's are perfect right out of the box.

carranty,

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I have worn hats for years but have never had a factory hat that fit well initially. Even after steaming I would have to suffer through wearing an uncomfortable hat until it would eventually conform to my head shape. When I received my first hat from Art several years ago I couldn't believe how well it fit me. The first time I put it on it felt like I had been wearing it for years. I always knew I was a long oval but never realized or even thought about my head being asymmetrical. I had Art make me a band block and that was when I realized it. My head is not only long oval but the front "point" of the long oval is off center. I have always had a hard time getting a crease centered on my nose and now I know why.

Art's hats and customer service are truly special.

In Homer Simpson speak, I call that DOH (diagonal oval hat). I am the same way. Before I got a band block from Art I would frequently re-steam brims, just to have them go "wonky" when I put the hat on. Now, with the band block in before the brim steaming, the brim holds the curl I want when I wear the hat.

Art could probably set up a side business, just making band blocks.

WOOHOO!!! A new color is in.
Behold, " Limestone"
This color right now is in Century felt and a new unnamed blend of beaver and Chinchilla. The blend is a project I am doing with Nick Foquet, formerly Westbrook Maker in Venice Ca, and I'm really excited about it. The first time I touched this felt I fell in love, you will too.

Looks terrific Art. The colour looks like it is very versatile. Any idea of pricing on the new mix?

I love the hat you used to introduce it.

Thanks Duper, I believe this is neutral enough to accept many ribbon combo's. The hat pictured is mine, well, I mean the prototype that just coincidentally is my size. ;)
Nick and I are still in discussion about the price of the Chinchillas. It may end up being my most expensive blend in my stable but that's why I had it done in 100% beaver also, to keep the price for the color in a reasonable range. At this moment it is only in dress weight only in the 100% and Chinchilla blend, ( no rabbit) . I need to see if it is popular among you guys before I go the next step and do it in featherweight also. With winter almost here I figure I have time.

Black Cherry

My Black Cherry arrived yesterday, and I couldn't be happier. I really don't know the dimensions - I'm sure Art does. I just know that I like how it looks on me. This color changes hue depending on the amount of light and the type of light source. I think calling it black cherry may not do the color justice. Perhaps Black Chameleon would be better.

Though I haven't had the opportunity to wear it with various color outfits, I get the sense that this color will go with just about everything. The color can be cool with blues, and it seems that it warms right up next to browns.

Yes, I'm happy.

Thank You Art and what Gray should be next.

Good afternoon, Hi Art.

I received My first VS Art hat 2 weeks ago and all I can say is I LOVE IT! Thank you ART!!! Pecan Pinetop. the fit and finish are spot on and what a great color.

That said I have 2 off the shelf hats that I now just do not like at all !!! YUK, No competition, thin felt, cheap leather, short open crown ... lousy blocking and they were not inexpensive.

I do have a tricked out black cherry traveler (2 5/8 brim vs dimensional brim) coming from Bob at Black sheep which i'm sure will be another winner, waiting for a conformer from Bob.

ILL be in need of something gray before the dead of winter hits and I really do not like My Builtmore Florence in steel gray that I bought a few months ago, brim is too small 2 1/8 (looks like a trilby on me) crown is short (I took dent out,) I re steamed into a Tiny teardrop so it doesn't hit my head. had to put felt in band but I do not like the way it sits.

anyway thinking of another ART hat in a Gray : Granite , Dove , blue smoke or ???

Suggestions please.

many thanks

"John"

thanks for reply,

I was pondering a granite , the charcoal looks dark, My black cherry will cover any dark hat need. Thanks for the suggestion I was thinking granite with a Navy , eggplant or a deep burgundy ribbon.

don't know if Art has steel gray , though I read in a thread he had a batch made up? the steel gray has a green tint to it. granite looks like some brown tones to it?

Hi

Hats in Silverbelly and Granite tend to change colors in different light, an effect I don't like at all. I own a Silverbelly, but I got it on sale and it's been a beater the whole time. I like Sahara, Charcoal, Suntan, and Natural colored hats much better.

Just my $0.02
