What a fantastic find!! (I love those old diners)

If I was living and working in the US, I would be very tempted to get a loan and set up one of those old diners that are for sale, as I really think, in the right location, you could make a real killing on the nostagia (obviously service and products would have to be well up to par too). what a shame I can't float one across the Atlantic to the UK!

Heck, it'd be awesome to get together and get one for anywhere.

The Fedora Filling Station

Not to rip off of the Ford Filling Station in LA.

Who says you can't? Mr. H's Buick is only slightly larger than your average diner, and he was able to get it over there.

Paddy - next time you're down this way we'll have to arrange a trip to one of the original American diners in the London area. Have a look at this post in Root's The DINER thread.

That is a good idea Salv... that would make a great class outing... :p

Salv, I really must try this out sometime. Have you been? and what did you think of it?

I just love these old diners.

I've been a few times to both Fatboys and the Riverside, and while the food's not up to the standard of the diners I've been to in the US it's still good basic diner grub. How long are you in town for next week? We should try to fit in a visit - maybe Tuesday afternoon? BT will be leaving early to get his flight home on Tuesday morning and I was just going to head for home myself, but if you're not rushing off home we could go to one of the diners. If we went to the Riverside - the better of the two - I'd have to go home to collect the car first as the diner is out in Ashford in Kent, but I don't mind doing that. You could even come with me to save me having to come back into central London with the car. Anyway, let me know if you're about, and we'll make some arrangements.

Maybe we should move diner arrangements to the London in January... thread as well, to see if anyone else wants to go.

Ooh, let's get together and buy one and bring it to Willoughby, the new Fedora Lounge town. :)

Great! Does the train stop there? I'd like to "slow down to a walk and live my life full measure." ;)

The one in Philadelphia (my hometown) is pretty and '40s and glass brick... and it's not even that expensive. But you have to haul it away!

My sister is at a local university majoring in restaurant/hotel management - I can just see her face when I say "what about a diner? Maybe they'll give you extra credit!"

Then she'll put me under the new foundation. :D

Afraid I'm off early Tuesday back to the northern wastelands.

Bugger! When do you come down? Are you in London on Sunday 28th? Fatboys is closed on Sunday but we might be able to get out to the Riverview for a late lunch or an early dinner.

yeah- that place has been on the market for some time, the place is so big that it would take two days to rig it, and it's in the kind of neighborhood that you wouldn't want to leave your equipment in overnight. So- it'll probably stay there for quite some time.
Then comes the restoration costs, and the setup costs. These things get really expensive pretty quickly.

My mom points out it would be easy-ish to convert into a home once you move it out of Germantown.

I rather like the green/glass brick combo.
