My dad does. He's a retired environmental engineer. He decided to start running his own stumpgrinding business a couple of years ago because of the boredom of retirement. He sets a small amount ($100 per month) aside for just entertainment, and sometimes spends it on low stakes poker if he's ever near a casino (not that often).
Anyway, he's been down in Florida the past month and a half because of the hurricane cleanup. Doing jobs for FEMA means good money. So yesterday when he got paid, he decided to go to this Native American casino outside of Tampa. He played $2 and $3 limit texas hold'em poker with a progressive pot (a little bit from each table's, hand's pot goes into a bigger pot. If nobody wins it in a night, the progressive pot goes to the house.
He called me last night, saying that he was on his way home. When I asked why, he told me that he'd been playing poker. He gambles every so often, but never for high stakes, so I wondered why he was coming home, since he's been doing so well grinding.
He got a royal flush with all spades on a $3 hand, winning the progressive pot of $57,000.
When I asked him what he was going to do with the money, I figured he'd say something about taking the year off, or going on a vacation to Hawaii. Instead, he said "I'm going to buy a new stumpgrinder."
