Any reason to buy a new hat?

Is that any reason to buy a hat or any reason to but a hat? If you're looking for an excuse to tell yourself you don't need one. If you're looking for a reason from one of us well I guess "I don't own it" is as good as any. ANY reason to buy a hat is sure good enough for me.

The first hat I bought: I wanted a hat
The second: the first didn't look good on me, so I need to find out what does.
The third: I found what works for me.
The Fourth: coming soon. Found what works for me, but need several colors to coordinate with different outfits.
The Fifth: Haven't contemplated yet, but probably to replace one of the originals after my first attempt at "modification."
The Sixth: Haven't contemplated yet. All my hats have been rabbit fur so far, so I will probably convince myself to try beaver fur.
All others: Custom, custom, custom!!!!!!!!
After that: Vintage, vintage, vintage!!!!!!!
AND After that: No reason, I'm just addicted!

I think that sums it up pretty darn well! ;)

I think the reason we try to find a "reason" is for the benefit of our significant others... We try to convince them that we NEED to buy a new hat even if we only WANT to buy one.

Just wanted to say thanks and goodbye to everyone who welcomed me here. Its been made clear to me that I am not the appropriate kind of person for these forums so I have asked to have my account closed.

Of all the money that ere I had, I spent it in good company.
And of all the harm that ere I've done, alas was done to none but me.
And all I've done for want of wit, to memory now I cannot recall.
So fill me to the parting glass. Goodnight and joy be with you all.

Strange indeed. He's singing traditional Irish parting songs to the board members. That's nice.

To second Neophyte's post

The first hat I bought: I wanted a hat to cover my ears after they got burnt to a crisp at a Wichita Wrangler’s Baseball Game. I bought a Sunbody Gus with a 4 inch brim.
The second: I saw a bunch of pictures of the British WW2 bush hats while reading about WW2 in Burma. I bought a Bush hat from What Price Glory (the cheap nasty one like they used in the war).
The Third: I ended up at Fedora Lounge, went by Levine’s hat shop in St. Louis and picked up a Black Beaver Brand Stony River, which is now about a 2.75 inch brim and is effectively a Fedora.
The Fourth: While in Levine’s hat shop, I was wandering around and saw a Green / Brown Campaign Hat in my size for $25.00, and it followed me home (honest).
The Fifth: Went to Hatman Jack's to discuss either an interesting non-traditional Campaign hat or a traditional fedora. Jack helped me with a brim and crown size, ordered a Sunbody to fit my face (hopefully) to have him fix it. I'm planning a "Stewy" bash if possible or a tear drop other wise. I'm probably having Jack add a wide Maroon ribbon.
The Sixth: When I have LOTS of money, I'm ordering a custom 2.5-3 inch brim, 5.75 inch crown fedora in half beaver (or full beaver) in a tan color of some sort. Stewy bash, black or VERY Dark brown ribbon.
The Seventh: A replacement for the Bush hat, which is wool felt and won't hold it's shape. Probably a Akubra, but Stetson in St. Joe is kind of close. I may also get a light tan Stratton and put on a much wider ribbon (non-traditional).
All others: Custom, custom, custom!!!!!!!!
I probably won’t go vintage. I wear mine, I don’t have the space for collecting (I have my own library).

Cooties is always a worry. Never know which hat has them and which doesn't. If you get a hold of one without Cooties, you're good. It's luck, though, really.

Cooties? No hair, no worries. Fortune favours the bald!

I'm new here as well, and scrolling through these posts I did not see anything that would make facade think they were being pushed out.
From the reading I've been doing here in the last couple days, I already feel at home as it seems most everyone here are cordial, lovers of the past.

I suppose either one of two things happened:

1.) Someone flamed him with a PM or

2.) He realized he wasn't a hat person, or possibly not a "vintage" or "Golden Era" enthusiast.

I'm neither of those, yet I still feel at home on the Lounge. Oh well...

After visiting New York a few weeks ago, and going to Worth & Worth and then wanting to buy there, as my personal anecdote, I agree with you. In Quito, you should be able to get something good.

I say buy what you like. Who cares about the reasons? If'n ya likes it, BUY it!

I have bought new cowboy hats (got a Charlie On Horse I love), and I've bought hand made hats, and I've bought vintage. I love 'em all.

The main reason I've gone for the fedora of late is because I've always wanted one and just never pulled the trigger.

It's a man's hat, I tell ya! Leave the ball caps for the kiddes. Ain't nothing like a good fedora. I screams classy!

New Used Used New

I've been into hats for close to sixty years now. Most of the hats I own, I bought new, but I've got a few used pre-owneds as well.

What means most to me about the hats I bought new, is that each one has a personal history for me. There are stories about each one, memories associated with each one that are uniquely mine. Each is a kind of journal.

Each of the pre-owneds I bought because it looked like it had a story and the moment surrounding the purchase was a part of that story.

New or used, what matters is the story.

I like the idea of keeping the hat industry alive, seems like a viable justification. And why not? That hat was made for you... now there is a nice thought.

And yet, I really had no idea the very affordable amount of vintage hats in smaller sizes (lucky size # 7 here), until DinerMan pointed this out to me.

So I live on both sides of the fence... my grass is always green.
