Any reason to buy a new hat?

Is there any reason to buy a new hat or just stick with vintage?

Both present their pluses and minuses. With vintage you can get some spectacular hats and sometimes get a really good deal. Sometimes you can find a great hat that just needs a little cleaning or renovation work. The supply of vintage is not endless and the select does not always represent what you are looking for at the time whether size, color, make or style.

New tends to present a some what more available route. While the styles in production hats are a bit limited too, there is a pretty firm supply were you can order and receive the hat quickly and easily. Occasionally you may need to wait for a size or color to come back into stock after a production run. (Such as the Akubra Campdrafts in some colors.)

New also invites the idea of custom made and here new really shines because you can get pretty much what you want in: style, size, color combination, quality level and custom fit to your head. The investment is in time and money but in the end our intrepid crew of hat makers will aim to please so you'll be happy with the end result.

I have both vintage and new but look forward to better days that will allow my budget to include a custom hat.

"Honey it looks like it's going to rain tomorrow. I think I ring up (insert favorite hat maker/company) and order a new one just in case. Okay?"

:)

Now: Which hat maker would YOU insert? For me, probably Adventurebilt. But hey, unfortunately it doesn't look like rain here in South Téjas.

I'm less concerned about accidents happening to a replaceable hat. And getting stuff made to my own specifications is always a bonus! :)

Personally I go for Akubra or Stetson, but I'm currently saving up for a custom. Once that happens all bets are off!

For the cost to value ratio, I don't think you can beat Akubra, especially if the exchange rate helps me get one for under $100 shipped. I have 2 recently modern Stetsons, a Sovereign Roadmaster & a Pinnacle. Nice lids but the cost/value ratio is lots heavier on the cost side... [huh]

I'd go as far as to say that even if the exchange rate changes and an Akubra costs about $125 maybe even $150 they still represent a great value.

(I would add that I don't know if Matt Deckard has any MD-1 hats left in stock but that one is a pretty good value too although a bit higher $.)

I can agree with that for an Akubra. I personally think that a Work of Art for that price is a GREAT value for the cost for a 100% beaver = hard to beat!

Art's work in the custom arena is definately well worth the money and represents a great value especially when compared to many other custom hat makers. He has a great eye and he continues to strive to reach higher in style, quality and ability. If his work is in your budget you won't be dissapointed with Art's sublime creations.

One of the only reasons I have to buy a custom hat (besides my giant head) is that it's pretty hard to find a production hat in 100% beaver that's worth the price tag. I know lots of people are happy with their Stetson Pinnacles, but for my taste and head shape, it was a poor purchase, even at 1/3 of the price, which is what I paid from the outlet. Too low a crown to work with, and way too tapered for my style. It just barely works as a stingy porkpie, that's how tapered it is. Mike Moore described it as "half a baseball" when he blocked it to open crown. I need tall crowns, straight-sided as I can get. For that, it's either Akubra or my Tumwater for new hats. I've been pretty lucky with a few vintage, two Kitten Finish Resistols and my GTDean Stratoliner, but 7 3/4 long oval to 7 7/8 sizes are hard to come by in vintage hats. The ones I do get have often shrunk enough to where I can't hatjack them back to my size. It's tough to be cranially endowed. Frank
