It's currently running on Masterpiece Classic (PBS) and can also be viewed online here. The DoW and Wallis are portrayed as well as Hemingway and several other notables. Quite enjoyable so far.

I'm hoping to get this on DVD - missed it when it was showing originally on Channel 4 - it got great reviews - looks like it could be right up my street....

It's funny, really. Logan, the protagonist, is opaque. Macfadyen, who portrays him, is familiar as Tom Quinn from MI5 - where he had a chance for some real feeling to show thru the spy persona - but he doesn't seem to find the center in this sort of upper-class-everyman role.

You never really understand how it is he starts family after family after family. He's supposedly a writer, but seems to have little or no passion about that work.

I think it's telling that as much as he loves women, he can't catch a break with one until after he's had a vapid aristocrat wife and a son, then left them.

I am watching this down. Dowloaded it and I'm really enjoying it. It was very typical in a time of no therapy and mental health help after times of great trauma to move on to new people like he did after Freya. In this day and age we are taught that time alone to grieve and work on one's self after a break up or death of a partner is the way to go - not so back then. 'Moving on' was seen as the way of getting over something. On the flip-side, many women who had husbands killed during the war never remarried, even though they were young.

I like Matthew Macfayden. He's been in some many great TV series and movies like Death at a Funeral, The Way we Live Now, Pride and Predjudice, Little Dorritt, Frost vs Nixon, Incendiary, Pillars of the Earth, Spooks.

Loved the Duchess of Windsor's (Gillian Anderson) outfit on the golf course. Stunning!
