Any good tan cowhide oil leather jackets? budget - unlimited

Our unanimous point about fit isn’t that you won’t know what fits well or badly until it’s worn in. It’s that the nature of leather means customization generally doesn’t help; a well developed and established pattern is much more important.

I don’t have experience with Y2 or Double Helix but they’re quite expensive for an experiment. Furthermore most Japanese jackets tend to fit poorly especially on non Japanese physiques so keep that in mind as well.

In that case arn't standard japanese sizes normally very weird (big shoulders, flat chest) or will those jackets just break in to fit my body measurements after wear I definitely don't want it to look weird could I not just get the best of both world's(established patterns, good fit) by going to a tailor and getting them to build me a jacket?
I just want it to fit perfectly man

Or you can just get the western shirt one and put a zipper in yourself. This way you get both the Mad's jacket look but also zipper function. It would certainly be best to have before and after pictures with details of what was done to the jacket and how often it was worn. Sometimes you can find something like that here.

JP jackets have small shoulders for the Asian men’s smaller frame size. Their chest measurement is usually 2 sizes too small compared to the tag size. People usually have to size up by 1-2 sizes, but even then, the shoulders still wouldn’t fit the typical American/European frame.

It’s worse if you drop $2k or more on a JP jacket that doesn’t fit but is hard to sell in America/Europe. The clientele for those jackets is in JP.

Hi, I just wanted to give my two cents about ordering form tenjin works. The kip oil will age in a beautiful brown/orange way if I can believe the jackets for their ‘age competitions’ the are very responsive through instagram and I had no trouble at all communicating. It is possible to alter body length and sleeves.

I am still waiting for the jacket and I sincerely hope this gamble pays off. I wanted to let you know that every step of the ordering process was perfect

I think the most important bit os to manage your expectations. You will not get a jacket exactly as you envison it and it will not fit that way either.

With that out of the way, a jacket that has a good pattern will fit many different body types, yours included. So, my first advice would be to look at a lot of jacket pictures in all styles, and see which ones tend to look better to your eyes on average.

I would not say that RTW is better than MTM or Bespoke, but the opposite is not true either. As @Aloysius mentioned, it is a different world from suits.

That being said, in my experience, RTW Vanson generally looks much better than what you see on their website, and they offer great value.

Thedi will get you a good fit, he's been doing it for so long.

Johnson Leathers will hold your hand from start to finish and will get you a good fit as well.

Wildfang is also a great option.

From my experience, these are all good starting points. Do not take my word for it and look at the many jacket pics available.

And a jacket should fit well from the beginning, people used to say "it will break in" as a solution to everything, but it does not work that way, A jacket that doesn't fit new, will not fit broken in.

From my experience, if you don't know your measurements well It's best to get measured in person. Yes not practical w most makers here. Taking your own measurements and sending them in gives them an good idea but but far from perfect no matter how "great" the maker is. That's the big problem with buying online. Have reasonable expectations if you take your own measurements.

I've been mostly quiet about this for three years because everyone else has such good experiences, but I would definitely not recommend the Thurston route to anybody.

If they are out of executive judgment ordering a different jacket for you than the one you ordered, because they think it fits better (i.e. they want everyone in slim fits) and never even tell you they're doing this until you figure it out yourself, there's no way that can be considered good customer service. Especially when changing back to the order you actually made would then cost you an additional hundred bucks or so due to their stupid fit jacket system (which was enough of a margin for me at the time that I couldn't).

Hey all I'm trying to find a tan coloured cowhide oiled leather jacket between 1-4grand US which is basically unlimited hence the title and preferably a jacket made for riding but if you know any that aren't that would also be welcome.

I saw a pic of this leather jacket (Actor Mads Mikkelsen 1990s : r/OldSchoolCool (reddit.com)) and immediately wanted it but as for the colour I want something closer to this steer oil jacket from y2 (STEER OIL | Y'2 LEATHER (y-2leather.com)) but I can't seem to find any like it. Even y2 doesn't offer a jacket in a cowhide colour.


Here is what the y2 looks aged: Y2 Leather Unboxing at The Shop Vancouver week of Oct 25 (youtube.com) and is the end result that I want my jacket to look like. Any guidance you could give would be helpful, and this would be the first leather jacket I'm buying just an fyi.

I guess I was in the weird position where I knew enough about clothing that the fit jacket process was mostly pointless (not to mention, though I didn't realize it at the time, they sent me the fit jacket of a different jacket from the one I ordered because they thought it's a better jacket…) but not deep enough in the leather jacket world to realize I was being bullshitted/to be forceful in return. And I took the TFL testimonials about the Thurston fit jacket process seriously, when I shouldn't have.

When they said it would take the additional shipping costs (and subsequent wait) of another fit jacket to get what I actually ordered, I went with their plan. (Of course, with the way they hold your money hostage maybe I wouldn't have had any success even if I tried to push back.)

The best part? The whole thing with Thurston is supposed to be that their slots mean your jacket gets made quicker than Aero direct or whatever. I got my jacket over three months after Aero made it for them. My direct Aero orders all came as soon as they were made.

For the OP I think it might be worth a shot, especially because they have a good selection of Thedi to choose from.

Since OP is in Australia, I think ordering through Thurston would be a bit counterproductive. Shipping the fit jackets there and back would add up to a few hundred. Then again he's aiming to burn $4k so maybe this is all irrelevant.

It's like when this new money Chinese guy came on Styleforum wanting to spend $18k on a tailored suit and everyone was trying to explain to him that he could get multiple suits from the best tailors in London for that amount. People were jokingly trying to think of the kinds of ridiculous fabrics that might get you close to that amount.

Nah, you should avoid buying Himel due to recent negative ordering experiences (you can search the forum for this). Himel, buying used, is still good if you can get it at a reasonable price.

Im new here in terms of posting, but a longtime reader and fan of FL.... In terms of recent ordering experiences with Himel, I've just had a couple of jackets made over the summer and it was superb. The guy is obsessive about the details and I love it. YMMV
