I am so happy! I've been mopey since yesterday due to an unexpected car repair at the cost of $600. :eusa_doh: However, today was my lucky day! I've been looking for new dinnerware since ours is wicked old (as in bad old, like old new from ten years ago). I haven't liked anything I've seen selling new. I went to a local collectibles store and found these beauties! A whole set! 8 of each dinner plate, bread plate, bowls, cups & saucers, plus a serving platter, bowl, creamer and sugar server. MINT condition!

I paid $42 for all of it! The whole set! :eusa_clap I also got a great 40's dish towel! ($4).

Does anyone know if these would be dishwasher safe??? They do say "Ovenproof" on the bottom.

10 years is wicked old??? Huh.

My wife and I still use the stoneware we had when we were married in 1984. We've never felt the need to get rid of it - works great and stil looks OK.

The image is a bit dark - the inner rings are dark blue and brown. It's the Kaira pattern by Arabia of Finland. Mighty good stuff to last 22 years and counting.

Well, I should clarify- ours is showing its age- it's stoneware (from LL Bean, even) and is cracking & crazing. Maybe I should just return it for some cash!

My research indicates that these were made in the late 60's, so it was a retro pattern for then! I called my grandmother and she thinks they are dishwasher safe. I just washed them all by hand, but I will test one out to see!

I was watching Leave it to Beaver last night and was thinking how meat and potatoes would taste so much better on retro patterned plates. I can't wait to find out!

If you must know, I did not have a dishwasher until I got married. I put in dish soap (for sink washing!) into the dishwasher as a new wife. Ay Carumba! :eusa_doh:

You are so right! I'm veggie myself (don't you just hate categorisation!), but meat and potatoes sounds great, and don't forget that gorgeous, thick, succulent onion gravy. I'd use the tall jug I can see in the background, then a quick wash and it's warm milk! Enjoy

LL Bean

I want to clarify my LL Bean comment. I have worked at Bean's and am very familiar with their policies- I do not abuse them. I often donate LL Bean items to Goodwill, but only after cutting off the labels. Otherwise people would try to cash them in.

Regarding my plates, they are $40 per setting (I think ten years ago they were close in price). I am researching normal wear and tear, but I'm not entirely convinced that the finish coming off, cracks and crazing is to be expected for ten year old dishes. My mother has been using the same dishes for twenty years, and they look the same.

So, to be clear, I'm not an LL Bean scamm-ah. Just a hard working Maine-ah trying to get what I pay for. I called them and described the issue, and they said I can return them for a gift certificate. Sounds good to me!

Blue Heaven must have been immensely popular, because we see it at almost every estate sale we go to!

We use white Fiestaware for our everyday dishes, but we also collect white restaurantware and USQMD china, mostly 1940-41 dated. I always joke that one of these days our dining room is going to sink into the ground under the weight of it all. lol We used to collect USAMD china, but we recently sold our "collection" of odds and ends to a friend who has been buying up pieces of it for years.

That's why I only buy it at thrift stores. You can find plate, bowls, saucers, and serving pieces at almost every Goodwill, Salvation Army, Saver's, etc for next to nothing. When I see it at antique stores for $8 a plate I roll my eyes. Pieces like salt and pepper shakers are more rare though, those are worth some extra bucks.

My favorite pattern, which is rare (I found one piece in a thrift store once, never seen it before or since) is Eva Zeisel's Atomic Fantasy.

My wife and I dumped all of our matching sets and starting buying one piece of any that we liked at antique stores. The only matching is by color scheme and age- so when we entertain, everyone gets a different and very interesting plate, saucer, cup, etc. This has been a big hit with guests, and returning friends are calling dibs on "their" plate now.
