An Observation For The Observation Bar

Every Day

Every day seems the same,
but, every other day
offers a chance
of something new.

Unfortunately, every other day
soon becomes every day.
And every day is the same
as yesterday.

So, what will tomorrow bring?
Will it be the same as yesterday?
Thinking about yesterday,
it was the tomorrow of
of the day before.

And what about
the day after tomorrow?
Will it be similar to
the day before yesterday?

And what of the day between,
every other day?
What roll does it play
In the grand scheme
of life?

I believe the day in between
every other day
is today.
And it’s the same as yesterday

Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow.

There are two days in every week
about which we should not worry,
Two days which should be kept free of fear and apprehension.

One of these days is yesterday,
With its mistakes and cares,
Its faults and blunders,
Its aches and pains.

Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control.
All the money in the world cannot bring back yesterday.
We cannot undo a single act we performed;
We cannot erase a single word we said.
yesterday is gone.

The other day we should not worry about is tomorrow
With its possible adversities, its burdens, its larger promise.
Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control.
Tomorrow, the sun will rise,

Either in splendour or behind a mask of clouds,
But it will rise.
Until it does, we have no stake in tomorrow
For it is as yet unborn.

This leaves only one day, today.
All we can do is fight the battles of just one day.
It is only when you and I add the burdens of those two awful eternities:
Yesterday & Tomorrow,
that we break down.

It is not the experience of today that drives you mad.
It is the remorse or bitterness for something which happened yesterday,
and the dread of what tomorrow may bring.
Let us, therefore, live but one day at a time.

There was definitely no Psilocybin mushrooms in the chicken curry that was my meal last night.

Multiple sources say the expression originated with U.S. servicemen during WWII, meaning pretty much the same thing as “take a breather.” (I have no reason to doubt it, but sometimes it seems those sources are just citing one another and it becomes conventional wisdom, whether it’s true or not.)

In more recent times I’ve heard it used to mean a resigned acceptance of unfortunate realities that can’t be changed. You know, like a person in the end stages of pancreatic cancer having little interest in giving up the smokes at this point.

The phrase was used when I went into the service in '66. this is the one I wrote a few years back:

Smoke 'em if you got 'em

trained in the arts of death dealing
life taking measures were imposed
without concern
for the opposing combatants

quarter was never given
or considered
if an enemy was spared
he might return again
and the outcome could reverse

smoke ‘em if you got ‘em
was a common call
never partaking
was my choice

at night, we lived and slept in holes
small measures to be safe
but our foes knew each one
and where we hid

when they came
they came in force
in numbers so great
we couldn’t count

first call was
they’re in the wire
responding from our holes
raining hell fire on them
‘till the ammo ran out

next call, they’re in the compound
ell tee called in the strike…..

in a moment, it was over
soldiers no more
combatants no more
just the dead, the dying and the maimed

somewhere, someone said
smoke ’em if you got ’em
but no one did

Smoking was once considered more healthful than chewing, at least for the people who weren’t exposed to the chewers’ spit.

“Secondhand smoke” wouldn’t enter the popular lexicon for another several decades.
