Alexander Leathers Seal Brown Goat vs Seal brown jerky horse

Hello,

I have a question about the Alexander Leathers Seal Brown Goat and the Seal brown jerky horse.

I'm hoping those who have seen and perhaps handled both of these leathers can give me an idea of their qualities.

Which of these two leathers would develop the most character when aging? Which of the two would be more supple?

Thanks!

To be fair I don't think either is gonna develop very much character, but the Seal brown jerky horse will start off with more 'character' - if that's the right word for it. Of these two I'd take the goat.

That said, if you're getting goat then (IMO) it really ought to be the black goat. It is really nice stuff. Comparing it to some Levi's jackets that I've seen in black goat the AL stuff is much better looking - I'd guess theirs is grade 1

I'd assume the jerky horse would develop much more character than the goat. Goat doesn't tend to "age" really much at all. It only becomes slightly grainier in wear spots. I've never seen their seal jerky horsehide but, I do have a sample of their black jerky horsehide and it's fantastic leather with a ton of character that really came out when worked over a little to simulate wear.

That stuff about goat not aging isn't entirely accurate. It's how the goat is tanned that makes the difference. Chrome tanned - little age will show. Veg tanned - the die fades and wrinkles and looks fabulous. I sold a goat jacket last year that had developed a nice patina in just a few years.

For what it's worth: my Alexander Leathers Seal Goatskin is veg. tanned with a spray finish. I dunno what that means precisely, but perhaps a better informed Lounge-member can explain..

Thanks for the responses.

I think I'm going for the goat then.

Schitzo, have you been able to compare the black and the seal goatskin? Is the black goatskin so much better?

Would the black goatskin also be veg tanned and sprayfinished? If so will there be some color variation after a while, or will it stay black-black forever?

Ask for some samples of the two. I doubt there's much difference between the black and brown goat. I have one of their jackets in black goat and it is a nice hide. But if you search here you can see pictures of jackets in their brown goat which look just as nice.

Mark, I have samples of all four. But truth be told samples aren't really that helpful. It's usually just a bit from the edge of a hide which isn't necessarily representative of the hide as a whole. No matter, having seen the jackets close up when I went to the factory I would say that both jerkys and the seal goat are nice leathers. But the black goat is next level. Fyi, my frame of reference here includes seeing in the flesh jackets in aero's russet goatskin and their blue/black stuff + Levis black goat that they use on their current Bernardino jacket. The AL black stuff really is first class - I guess it must be grade one - and anything that you can have made in that (you can't have jackets with big panels) will be really good. Whether its veg tanned or not I have no idea. At some point this summer I hope, I will get something in that black goat myself

Hi Schitzo, I'm very curious about what you mean by next level. How would you discribe the difference between the seal goatskin and black goatskin? I don't know anything about hides and tanning etc. just some general differences.. Educate us please..

I have my first AL jerky horse on the way. I haven't had a great experience with horse over the years. Originally opted for goat but lengths were a problem so I went with horse. I will let you know on arrival.

I meant its next level to those others I mentioned. I have tried a jacket in the seal goat, and I'm not saying the quality of that batch is inferior to the black, just that the seal looks like quite a dull and bland colour to my eyes (of course this is all opinion) but that if you dig on goatskin (as I do) the black stuff is perfect cos in that shade the pebbly hide is really very striking - and it just looks awesome. For me, it exhibits perfectly the charm and appeal of goatskin, noticeably more so than all of the afore-mentioned, IMHO

Re: jerky horsehide
I was looking at a few jackets in black. That stuff, appearance wise, looks exactly the same as the vintage black FQHH I saw on Aero's new Original Hercules jacket and Cropduster when I went there the day before. The only difference I could discern is the weight as the grains were seemingly identical.

Anyway Mark, on this topic are you sure you don't wanna consider a few more options? There are some awesome as yet unmentioned here choices that I reckon you should have a serious think about before you look past. Eg: kudu, russet buffalo & the oil pull steers. Not to mention the imminent Horween steer which I guess won't be too shabby either if you like the heavier stuff

I dont know if anybody experienced that, but i think that goat has a tendency to scratch easily (the underskin shows). Also around the stiching you tend to see quite a bit of the underskin.

I've had goat samples from AL and Aero and have always found it really hard to scratch that stuff up

Jerky Horse and Brown goat.

I have sample jackets in both hides and The customers Seem to prefer the look and feel of the brown goat over the jerky horse. The Jerky horse has some great character already and those that have goat for a long
time and have some vintage goat pieces know that it does develop of great character over the years it just takes a little longer.

I will have to agree that the Black Goat looks incredible in person.
