I just 'acquired' another glen grey cattleman... Unwanted and hardly worn. I have a stock standard identical cattleman, so I'm going to use the second one as an experimental hat. Working on streaming out the existing bash, and will try a diamond- not a lot of crown to play with. If like to try an amateur partial reblocking to try to 'square up' the very domed crown a bit. I have a paint can about the right size! Will also trim the brim.... Not sure how much yet. Images to follow.

An update with my initial bash - I wanted something reasonable soft and subtle - centre crease and gentle pinch, with the front brim turned down a little. I love the way this hat responds to a little steam - it takes some coaxing to get it to take a shape, but once it sets it's bounces back to set shape very well.

I will let it settle and wear it in for a week or so, and then tweak if I need too.

I have been looking for a hat like this, the soft pinch is a very nice and relaxed look

Fair warning. More Overload Ahead!

Yes ladies and gentlemen, the Kangaroo has once again delivered a box to Iowa. I could only get off a couple of shots before the battery in my camera died but here you have it.

I won't spend any time on the Cattleman, since we are all familiar with it by now, except to say that "sand" is darker than I expected and looks lighter in sunlight than indoor light.

I laughed out loud when I pulled the Planter out of the box. It felt like a chunk of hard plastic making me think it was one of those polypropylenes that Akubra is fond of. On closer assessment under a loupe, yes, this may indeed be a hemp weave but it's been sprayed liberally or dipped in shellac or some similar organic agent......... some sort of organic polymer perhaps?....... say it isn't so! :eeek:. I took it for a test drive on an after dark dog walk!

More to come when I can find some good light.

Cheers! :cheers1:

I watched a video someone posted a while back, must have been last winter maybe. In it they discussed a shortage of hare supply and talked about importing hare. They also mentioned that they buy wool. What would they need wool for? I really hope they aren't cutting the mix with wool or planning to. Their "superfine" mix does feel a little questionable. Yes I get a little paranoid about things like this.

well here is a newly purchased Snowy, i steamed and shaped this and will replace the ribbon soon...
Nice work on the reshape, I'm really diggin' it! By flattening the brim on the sides and "snapping" it down in the front, you're sure to get better sun protection than the factory crease would provide. I kinda' like the plaited leather band and I think it suits the hat, but I'd like it more if Akubra hadn't attached their logo to it.
