Akubra Overload

Thank you. I'm still trying to get my next hat figured out. It's been since a year and a half since I got myself a new one (Stetson Open Road), but I would go either Akubra or vintage for my next hat due to rain-wear functionality. I feel safer knowing that my hat is OK to wear under these conditions, as my previous Open Road (I got an exchange) did poorly.

My next hat may be either the Overlander/Snowy River for more of a cowboy style, or a fawn Federation IV as a tan dress hat.

I just ordered a Federation from Hatsdirect and since I have ordered quite a few hats in size 59 from them before, Trudi emailed me and asked if I wanted to get a 60 instead. She said the Federations do run a little smaller than the rest of the Akubras. A size 59 in the Federation is about 58.5 cm and the 60 is about 59.5 cm. I went with the 60 instead. I haven't received the hat yet so I can't comment on the fit but normally a size 59 in the Campdraft fits me perfectly.

By the way, this is just an example of the great customer service you get from Hatsdirect. They are a pleasure to deal with.

Why don't you try a Borsalino or other tapered men's dress hat? You might like one of those. E Bay or new.

Yeah, it's about time I consider another hat!

Borsalino has nice hats, but they are generally very expensive and can't take rain well from what I've heard. If I were to get one, it would be the Borsalino Film style, but at that price I'd rather have a custom by Art Fawcett or John Penman. I don't think modern Stetsons are much better than Borsalino either, but they are more affordable, as well as Christy's. My Akubra has never had problems with the rain or snow, so that's what I'm trying to go for outside of a higher end custom hat to be as durable. Another hat I'm considering is a Panama from Panama Bob.

Borsalino has nice hats, but they are generally very expensive and can't take rain well from what I've heard...

I wouldn't wear my quasi modern Borso in a fog let alone a mist or outright rain.
Get an Akubra from rain hat. They love the wet.

Maybe it's been said, but does anyone know the crown height of the Akubra Snowy River/Overlander (same hat, right?) when the crown is popped up like an open crown? It's supposed to be 4 inches the way it comes, but does that refer to the dome in the middle created by the teardrop crease, or is that the top of the sides? I'm on the fence about ordering, as I don't want a crown too low, but I like the way they look. I just don't want to end up with a hat that gradually shrinks down to about 3 1/2 inches crown height after getting wet repeatedly. Anything under 4 inches is too low of a crown.

I don't have a snowy river any more to measure but I can tell you that the crown of the snowy river is very low. I've handled over a hundred different hats by now and it's one of the lowest I've handled. It's also a very stiff hat (the stiffest Akubra I've ever handled). I've had 2 different used ones from ebay (one vintage and one reasonably modern) and couldn't get either to change to a long oval through normal wear so I sold them on. The felt is thin and extremely stiff.

Looking to purchase the stylemaster, so can anyone tell me what color the carbon grey is? Like a charcoal, blue gray? ect. Also do not know the difference between a David Morgan Akubra and a regular Akubra? Are there any? Thanks

David Morgan sells Akubras in the US and I think he has a couple of special versions customised for him by Akubra. Just like Hatsdirect has Federation IV, Akubra tends to provide different resellers with special hats when asked.

I have a charcoal and glen grey. Charcoal is almost black, glen grey is grey on a darker side with blue tint, I would say that carbon grey is in between those two.

Snowy River crown height: 4" at the front pintch and 3 1/2" in the back. Mine was stiff at first but softened up with some rain and working the felt a little with my hands. Oh and hello everyone! I am new to the lounge. This is actually my first post!

I don't have any pictures of it yet but I just received a Moonstone Campdraft from Hatsdirect. It is a great color. I think I like it better than the Glen Grey but they are both very nice colors.
