Akubra Overload

The Good

Another hat I'm thinking about is the Silver Spur. I like how it doesn't have the holes on the side so common to Akubra hats. It kind of reminds me of some of the hats John Wayne wore too.

I'm thinking that the Snowy River or Overlander hats are too low crowned, and the brim is too dipped down in the front and back. Am I right in thinking that the Silver Spur starts with a relatively flat brim (or one that is curled at to begin with)? Also, is that color really accurate to the sandtone fawn tone, or does it appear differently outdoors? Anybody want to show a sandtone fawn hat here?

Three month waiting on a Boss of the plains and a Silver Spur from EA. Should be here around Christmas or soon after. What more could you ask for than an Akubra for Christmas? How about two!

Nice, that's what I'm going for too. You're getting the silver spur, is it the sandtone or black one? I've seen a couple pictures on the internet of black ones, but not the sandtone tan hat.

My concern is that Everything Australian has the hat at 4.75 inches, and this website below has it at 5 1/2.

It's meant to be open crown from the latter, but is EA's crown height based on the crease?

The Snowy River's crown is pretty low. The only thing I don't like about it actully. I ordered the Silver Spur for the reason you gave: higher crown and no holes. Note that it comes with an open crown. I emailed EA about that because the measurements they gave seemed too low for an open crown and seemed to fit the crease shown. They said that the measurements given are a creased crown. Not sure why they would do that when they ship it open.

I ordered sandtone fawn. I think that the pic you posted is this color. So hard to tell how it will actually look. I was just going to wait and see.

OK, thanks. I think I'm ruling out the Snowy River style. Now it's between the Silver Spur sandtone fawn hat, or Federation IV in tawny fawn. I think I'm wanting a western style this time, as the Fed IV is essentially the same as my brown one, only a different color. I thought about the Stylemaster too, but maybe I'll wait before I get another dress hat.

Well now I just dont know what to think. My Snowy River has a 5 1/2" open crown. The Silver Spur sure looks like a much taller crown to me even when creased. I was thinking it had a 6 1/2" crown. No facts to back that up though, just from the looks of it. I wish these dealers would care a little more about what they were selling.

The silver spur has a much higher crown than a snowy river. I've had both in the past and the silver spur was one of the highest crowned Akubra hats I've had. I would place it at slightly taller than both the Fed IV and the Campdraft but as I no longer have it here I can't measure it exactly.

I was considering a snowy river as well, but this silver spur, and the price on the site above, may be the solution. My only dislike is that it appears to be a really wide brim, at 89mm (approx 3.5"). Is this correct?

That is the brim size. The one I had was made of very thin light felt that was a bit stiff on the brim (though nothing like modern hatco hats) and very flexible in the crown.

But on the other hand, it's a raw edge brim, so it's only a trim away from whatever you want.

I kinda wish EA put windstring eyeletts near the hatband as DM does. Makes it easy to place a simple DIY windstring for those windy days. Looks better to me without them but they are handy and I use mine fairly often. I have even cut holes in a few "beater" hats for that reason. Hate fly away hats! Only happened once but it will never happen again!

Ok, this is bothering me. The SR, Overlander, Cattleman and Territory share the same crown shape but are they the same overall size? My Cattleman's crown is bigger. Doesnt have the taper as my SR and measures slightly higher.

On the EA site I see they will add a free kangaroo leather chin strap to any Akubra ordered. It is very obvious, but on some hats like a Cattleman it may be fine.

Ok, this story takes Akubra Overload to a whole new dimension. They held a muster (rally) today in Kempsey, the home of Akubra with the goal of entering the Guiness Book of Records. They were aiming for 1000 folks wearing their Akubras. They had tried before and fell short, but today they more than succeeded. Over 1900 Akubra fans showed up and were counted.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-09/kempsey-sets-akubra-wearing-record/4363018?&section=news

They started arriving around 06:30 AM their local time to assemble for the official count.

I particularly like #27 - #29 of the slide show for showing the volume of hats in the corral.
