Akubra Overload

I saw another lounger do this so I thought I would ask for help, my wife and mother like to buy me hats for Christmas, but that is dangerous because they would just buy the cheapest hat they could find lol. THey asked me for a list this year of Akubras I would like, I own two that serve two different purposes, I have a Tablelands as my hunting, fishing and outdoors hat and I have a Stockman for more casual times but it is decidedly Australian in appearance with those sides of the brim turned up. I took pics of myself in both and a modern strat just as a picture of what a 2 1/2 brim looks like on me. I would like opinions about Akubra styles offered from EA that would look best on me. Thank you in advance.

I think the Strat looks best on you, but that might be because I've never really cared for the "outback" or "western" styles of hats. I also think a hat with a straight-sided crown (i.e., no taper) suits you best, so I'd suggest the Campdraft as well. On the other hand, if you're not opposed to ordering from Hats Direct, I can't think of any time I thought a Fed IV looked bad on anyone. I know this doesn't help much, but...well, you asked. :D

I vote for a Camp Draft again. Sam at EA could have you fixed up before Xmas with a Bluegrass green as that is the colour he typically stocks. He had told me a while back he still had one remaining Bluegrass green special edition with the 2 5/8 brim in a size 61. Not sure of your size? If I was a size 61 I would take it off his hands quickly.

How about an Akubra Leisure Time? It is an Akubra stocked item in regency fawn? It also has a narrower brim.

I believe I got the last Lounge special from EA a few weeks ago.

Well, it came! After three months of waiting, it's here. Mostly dry bash with just a touch of steam to set in a few creases. This one is STIFF compared to my BlueGrass Green CD. But this feels like it will break in nicely. Anyway, there's nothing here you haven't seen a million times, but hey... who of us can turn away from gratuitous hat photos .
Mine showed up on Saturday, silverbelly as well. Nice bash on yours. I'm still a bit undecided what I'm going to do with mine, but I'm leaning towards a center dent with broad pinches. I don't know. Reckon I'll figure it out this evening. Fun dilemma.

Loved reading through this thread but you guys really aren't great for my wallet :) I've had a couple of Snow River hats since 1988 or '89 when I was in college. Never really wore hats as much until more recently. Started cheap and simple with some boonie hats and then on to some Tilleys. Now I'm discovering my love of the Akubras so the Snowy Rivers are back in rotation and also recently purchased a Banjo Paterson which I absolutely love.... And to make things worse there are some more in the mail.. The graphite Banjo and a sand Leisure Time... Can't wait and thanks to all for all the information on here!

Hi Motorcyclist, did you like the sand Leisure Time? Did you post any pictures? It has been on my list to acquire for a long time. Now with winter here I won't mind the 3 month wait when I place an order from Sam at EA. I am sorry I missed out on the Fern Green option but Akubra discontinued the colour. I have 2 Banjos and I figure the size and shape of the LT are pretty close and I wanted the light sand colour for summer.

Two Akubra sightings today at the same train station - a woman with what I believe to be a Pastoralist and a guy in a Banjo. Who would have thought?

Edit: more likely a Plainsman than a Pastoralist

By having an akubra Coober pedy in a fawn with hint of olive in it depending on the light I forget what akubra calls it. I gave it a center crease wit a pinch at the front of the crown. Then I totally re worked the brim1/2 a pencil curl then slightly down in front. I didn't care for the outback look on me with this hat. Sorry no pictures I don't know how. For the price of an akubra you got one heck of a hat!!

History - I don't have any (or not yet as I just bought two vintage Akubra fedoras and they are on their way), but I've always like the Stylemaster. It may not scream Australian, but I like the lines. It is a bit Indiana Jonesish.

By the by gents, do you know if the 50's Akubra hats used the English sizing or the American sizing? Thanks in advance.

Over dinner tonight my wife and son asked me what I wanted for Christmas, so I asked myself what would be not too expensive and what could I get in time to put it under the tree. It took me all of about three seconds to make my decision -- the Fed IV! I just received my SBCD very recently, and last year I got the BGCD, so the question now was, "What color?" My son suggested black as I have only one other black hat and it's a straw, so I thought it was a good suggestion, but when I got home and Googled "black Akubra Fed IV" I was surprised to see exactly three photos. Not one to be deterred by such a fact, I went ahead and ordered one from Hats Direct (my favorite photo of someone wearing a hat is one of Gary Cooper sporting a black fedora). Still, it seems curious to me that black hats are so rare (excepting the Lubavitcher community), as they go with just about anything. Anyway, now the wait begins. I love this addiction, but, man, it seems to be picking up speed.

Weird, but when I got my BGCD I just went with a diamond crease and bent the brim down in front. When I got my SBCD last week or so, however, the thing seemed to want the diamond crease, but it demanded an upturned brim in front. I tried turning it down, but it looks much more natural with the up-turn. Some of the members here were discussing this phenomenon recently of hats seeming to decide for themselves what kind of crease and look they want, and darned if it isn't true. Try telling this to nonbelievers.

I own a couple of black hats, having just gotten my hands on a black Hommie recently. I think they're just associated with formality and, dare I say it, mourning. I think you see more black westerns than fedoras. I have a black Stetson fedora that doesn't look too formal that I don't mind wearing at any time.

But, you'll always be ready for temple.

I got my Fed IV a few weeks ago. I decided I wasn't up to bashing it myself, so I took it to a local hat store (which shall remain nameless) and had them do it for me, in a basic center dent. After a while I decided I didn't like it - the crown was too high and, shockingly for a "professional" bashing, the dent and dimples were noticeably off center. So I decided to do it myself after all and put it into a teardrop crease, which I have to say looks better. The "dome" in the center is a little higher than I'd like, sticking up above the sides of the crown a bit, but I'm unwilling to mess around with the hat anymore at this point, and it's not really noticeable when I have it on.

The point of this is that all of you guys who say it's not a big deal to bash your own hat have been right all along. As you already know.

Easy peasy. Can't imagine bothering or paying someone else to do the same thing.

I do make an allowance for my custom made hats since the "artist" usually has a good eye for what looks good on his creation!

Ha, I'm afraid I've been MIA with religious institutions for some time, and, besides, Catholic churches don't even allow baseball caps (and rightly so). One of the reasons I ordered a black one was that I've recently been wanting to wear my tweed jackets, several of which are black and white herringbone or birdseye patterns, and I don't think any color would go as well with them as black. I think it might also work well with just a pair of black boots, jeans, and a flannel shirt. I guess I'll find out on Christmas morning.

The black fedora I referred to is really a very dark charcoal, that may be a bit more versatile. The Hommie is definitely black.

So have you ever hung your hat on those little clips on the back of the pews?
