SgtRick, what differences are there between Adventurer and Fed 4?
Do you prefer one over the other?

Current Akubra lineup I own:

CEO (Fern)
Adventurer (Brown)
FED IV (Brown)
Stylemaster (Acorn)
Stylemaster (Moonstone - ordered)

James makes all the Akubras look good but I still think he looks best in his Campdrafts.

BTW, I understand the FED IV and Adventurer are very similar. The Adventurer also has a dimensional brim but wider at 3 1/8" x 2 3/4" while the FED is 2 3/4" X 2 1/2"

Aww shucks.

The campdrafts are great hats. I love my silverbelly, but the glen grey with the wide black ribbon gets more wear than any of the rest of them. It just goes well with suits for work days. I'm never comfortable mixing black and blue office wear with earth colored hats.

Having said that, I'm having a casual day today in jeans and white business shirt with a fine blue line which I've topped with a dark brown fed 4.

I actually have the Adventurer with me in Iraq and my Fed IV Deluxe at home. Really they are very similar with the felt a little better grade on the Fed IV Deluxe. Color is the same as is the ribbon from what I can remember. My Fed IV Deluxe is a 59 and I ordered the Adventurer in a 58 since I wear my hair alot shorter in Iraq. Both are great hats. The Adventurer is a tough hat having survived the Iraqi summer temps of 130 plus. It will be shipped back to the states once I am out of Iraq for good. The Fed IV Deluxe I consider a bit dressier if that makes any sense. The Adventurer is a great knock about type hat not that the Fed IV couldn't be but with the price difference I will "baby" the Fed IV a little bit more. Maybe someone who has both could do a better job on this subject than I.

Who put the black ribbon on the gray Campdraft--the store, or you? What's the width of the ribbon you've got? I might want to do that, if I buy a gray Campdraft.

Thanks SgtRick and Gromulus. My curiosity about Adventurer and Fed4 is not so much about the brim measurements, but how they sit on the head and how they look while wearing them. Is crown height and "fullness" the same? Stiffness?

Speaking of bringing up a completely off the topic issue:

I understand that Hugh Jackman wore an Akubra in "Australia."

I was watching it again recently and even looked at some stills on line and just wondered ... Does anyone get what his hatband is supposed to be?

Is that a bunch of cords wrapped around with a different color cord in the middle?

It's not beads, is it?

Hers is a modified Squatter, from what I've read.

His band might be twined, twisted leather, too, I just can't tell. I suppose it is to look Aboriginal?

From what I've read, Akubra made ALL the hats used in the movie and the woman who did the costume design, used existing models of Akubra's for the basis for all the hats with the Squatter being the primary model they worked with. R.M. Williams in Australia was the "official" retailer for some of the hats the year the movie came out but they are not available anymore.

My avatar picture (drawing) is my Adventurer but if you go to my profile I have an actual picture of my wearing it. I think both look great on my head and if I could only choose one it would be the Fed. They fit the same but I just like the Fed better (a little). I wear the Adventurer in Iraq because I didn't want anything to happen to my Fed. So far though I have absolutly no compliants about the Adventurer. I don't find the crowns on either one to be to tall. Both come unbashed so you can do what you want with it. I played with the Adventurer for a while then spritzed it lightly to hold the bash. Honestly though you can't go wrong with either one. With my untrained eye I can't tell the difference between the 2.
