It's finally a nice drizzly day here in San Antonio. I waffled a bit this morning between my 100X Stetson and my Akubra. I decided it was a perfect day for my sand colored Akubra Kiandra. Get it as wet as you want to and then just let it dry. No plastic hat covers for me! What a great hat. I've had it for a few years and love it. This hat has just a hint of western flair, much like Tim Holt's hat in "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre". I've worn it everywhere, even to Paris where I probably stood out a bit more than I would like. I've seen some posts on Akubras but not the Kiandra. I'd love to hear someone elses thoughts on it. By the way, I wish every hat maker's sweat bands were as comfortable as Akubras. I believe they're made from Kangaroo.

As a side note this site is great. I've been a fan of hats since I was very young. I really enjoy reading all the posts and have learned a great deal. Thanks to everyone.

Regards,

Hi Burger,
just checked out the Kiandra. Like you say, just western enough to be western:)
I've got the Akubra Fed coming in a few days and your words have made me even more excited at the prospect of getting a hat from them.
Is your Akubra stiff like modern Stetson cowboy hats? Or a bit more malleable?

Welcome Burger
Good to hear you had such a nice experience with your Akubra. I have been wearing them for a few years now and find the best way to break them in is wear them in a rain storm. Gives them a natural, relaxed look rather then a hard factory produced mold. Just wondering how you came to own the hat? Does a store down in Texas carry them or did you order it on-line?

Akubra hats

The sweatband in Akubra hats is roaned sheepskin. They have arguably the best sweatband available to the general population. The Heritage series has a wider band than do the lesser, but still very good, models.

I own about ten Akubras and I think they are the best hat for the money bar none. If a person wants to get into hats on a limited budget Akubra is the way to go. There are several Australian sources over the internet which offer much better prices and selection that the few resources in the USA. A Google search will bring up a number of these outlets, the best known on this forum is Hats Direct.

The Akubra is significantly more malleable then a quality Stetson and I agree with Johnny that they get even better after a few soakings in a Texas thunderstorm.

We have some excellent hatters here in San Antonio and Texas in general but I ordered this one from David Morgan who has a great selection of Akubras.
