Certainly, I'm no finance/trading wiz. But, I went the HD site to consider ordering a Fed IV Carbon. Looked at the price and was thinking that it has gone up.
Well, DUH!!!!
The AUD/USD rates change daily, but this looks like a trend...hightest since OCT 2008:

So, get 'em while they're hot. As for me, the rate is such that I am having second thoughts.

And for me in Canada the rates are going down :) About $2 cheaper than the other week so now a Moonstone and Carbon Fed IV are in the mail and headed my way. All that's left now is the Deluxe.

Looking past the rank dishonesty, the silly thing about encouraging a supplier to lie about whether a hat is a gift/ sample or not is that there is no duty on fur felt hats coming into the US from Australia:

Tarrif code 65059004
Brief Description Hats and headgear of fur felt made from hat forms and hat bodies of 6501

Says zero duty if you look that up on
http://dataweb.usitc.gov/scripts/tariff_current.asp

I've seen others post here about how great it was they get a hat marked gift... so venting a little bit, I think anybody lying or encouraging others to lie, in addition to marring their own character on a karmic level, risks getting hats on some sort of special trouble / watch list and screwing up the business for the rest of us.

Of course there is financial incentive to dishonest behavior when there is a tariff: fur felts are are assessed 12.5% Australia to Canada and 15% US to Canada. It would be great to get Canada in on this supposed free trade business, but the more people circumvent the system the longer it will take to improve.

I'm not sure if it's new policy or an anomaly, but I got two hats from Hats Direct and I had to sign for the package. Anyways, the shipping is very fast for being from Australia. I was very happy with the order.

Here in the UK, I've had two Akubras and a Drizbone coat from hats Direct over the last few years. Never been charged any customs on them. Also had a few Swanndri items from New Zealand, also no problems.

On the other hand, I've given up buying anything from the States as I always get charged Customs, Import duties and the Post Office also charge me £8 on top for the privilege of getting the cash off me and giving ot to the Revenue men!:rage:

Im not very good in history or politics :eusa_doh: , but I think Australia is still a member of the Commonwealth. Maybe that's why you didn't have to pay customs.

Hey T1K, once when I received two hats in one box, I had to sign as well.
Maybe at a certain $$ limit is when that kicks in.

Welcome and post pics along with your opinions of them sometime :)

My first Akubra (Stylemaster) I ordered from EA (Everything Australian) and had to be home to sign for it. The two Akubra hats (Fed IV & Campdraft) I've ordered from HD (Hats Direct) were delivered without signing. =) My most recent purchase from HD was in stock and arrived in Tampa, Florida in fewer than 8 days from Katoomba, Australia! That is with the least expensive shipping option to the US. I now order from HD without worry.
That's a great enouragement; I'm waiting now in Sarasota for a Campdraft from HD!

Didn't have any trouble with the two Feds I ordered. In the second case, the Moonstone, it arrived during the Christmas break at my college. The mail department was open, but I had to drive to work to get the hat. (It was worth it -- and pleasant: The mail department here is NOTHING like the U.S. post office, which I avoid whenever possible.)
