I propose that we band together and post photos here on this thread of every hat color Akubra offers, along with each name equivalent they are called by all known vendors. This info may already be spread over scores of threads, but I'm sure Akubra lovers like me would greatly appreciate it all in one place.
Yes, I know, colors look different depending on the lighting in which the photo was shot, but that problem could be minimized by everyone submitting pics shooting them without flash in natural indirect outdoor light (either in the shade or on an overcast day). Another photo problem is that some hat colors are especially sensitive to picking up background shades, but that could be ameliorated by shooting pics against a neutral background.
And, yes, I also know that colors appear different due to the quality and settings of the computer screen, but unless we all show up at MK's house in person with trunks full of hats, online is the best we can do. Of course, if MK were to invite us for such a color convention for, say, a week, and provide food, drinks, and lodging, I'm sure many of us would come!
Vendor online pics are often way off, and though print catalogues are usually better (if available at all), they are no guarantee of color accuracy, either. I recently spoke with David Morgan on the phone, and the rep was the first to say that the Bushman's Nullarbor Tan color appeared quite green in its Fall and Winter 2009/2010 catalogue, though the true color is a dark beige with virtually no green tone.
In addition, vendors use their own names to describe a color, which further confuses us. So a second thing that's needed is a color translation chart to help us ascertain whether a color by one vendor is equivalent to or different from a color offered by another vendor calling it by its own name. I can offer one now: According to DM, The color "sandtone" that Akubra uses on its web site is exactly the same color that David Morgan terms "fawn." The Snowy River, Stockman, Territory, Cattleman, and Coober Pedy, are widely available in this color.
OK, so that's the general Akubra color issue and my proposal to address it.
Now, to my present personal color problem: I want a new Akubra in the earth tone color range, but not the same as or too close to my Stylemaster's "Acorn Fawn," a term used by Everything Australian, the vendor from which I purchased it.
Does this color go by other names, and, if so, what are they?
All my other Akubras are rather dressy--the aforementioned Stylmaster, a moonstone Fed IV Deluxe, a charcoal Sydney--so I want a purely casual one I can use for power-walking in the rain, shooting, hiking, and cool-weather yardwork, yet I don't want a too "outbacky" or American western style, and wish to keep the brim in the 2 3/4- to 3 1/4-inch range.
So far, within those color and style parameters, I've narrowed my choices down to a regency fawn Angler, heritage fawn Banjo Patterson, heritage fawn Lightning Ridge, dark fawn Lawson, and nullarbor tan Bushman. Feel free to make more suggestions within my constraints.
Y'all would be doing me a great favor to post photos of hats in each of these colors, as it's the color that will be the critical deciding factor. Throwing up an acorn fawn anything alongside these for comparison would be terrific. For example, is heritage fawn lighter than regency fawn, and, if so, by how much? Is dark fawn really a dark brown? Just what tone of "dark beige" is nullarbor tan, which in some photos appears quite brownish while in others more caramel.

But yeah, they all pretty close. I probably would have bought different colors had I known because I've got a lot of similar stuff now.
