I propose that we band together and post photos here on this thread of every hat color Akubra offers, along with each name equivalent they are called by all known vendors. This info may already be spread over scores of threads, but I'm sure Akubra lovers like me would greatly appreciate it all in one place.

Yes, I know, colors look different depending on the lighting in which the photo was shot, but that problem could be minimized by everyone submitting pics shooting them without flash in natural indirect outdoor light (either in the shade or on an overcast day). Another photo problem is that some hat colors are especially sensitive to picking up background shades, but that could be ameliorated by shooting pics against a neutral background.

And, yes, I also know that colors appear different due to the quality and settings of the computer screen, but unless we all show up at MK's house in person with trunks full of hats, online is the best we can do. Of course, if MK were to invite us for such a color convention for, say, a week, and provide food, drinks, and lodging, I'm sure many of us would come!

Vendor online pics are often way off, and though print catalogues are usually better (if available at all), they are no guarantee of color accuracy, either. I recently spoke with David Morgan on the phone, and the rep was the first to say that the Bushman's Nullarbor Tan color appeared quite green in its Fall and Winter 2009/2010 catalogue, though the true color is a dark beige with virtually no green tone.

In addition, vendors use their own names to describe a color, which further confuses us. So a second thing that's needed is a color translation chart to help us ascertain whether a color by one vendor is equivalent to or different from a color offered by another vendor calling it by its own name. I can offer one now: According to DM, The color "sandtone" that Akubra uses on its web site is exactly the same color that David Morgan terms "fawn." The Snowy River, Stockman, Territory, Cattleman, and Coober Pedy, are widely available in this color.

OK, so that's the general Akubra color issue and my proposal to address it.

Now, to my present personal color problem: I want a new Akubra in the earth tone color range, but not the same as or too close to my Stylemaster's "Acorn Fawn," a term used by Everything Australian, the vendor from which I purchased it.

Does this color go by other names, and, if so, what are they?

All my other Akubras are rather dressy--the aforementioned Stylmaster, a moonstone Fed IV Deluxe, a charcoal Sydney--so I want a purely casual one I can use for power-walking in the rain, shooting, hiking, and cool-weather yardwork, yet I don't want a too "outbacky" or American western style, and wish to keep the brim in the 2 3/4- to 3 1/4-inch range.

So far, within those color and style parameters, I've narrowed my choices down to a regency fawn Angler, heritage fawn Banjo Patterson, heritage fawn Lightning Ridge, dark fawn Lawson, and nullarbor tan Bushman. Feel free to make more suggestions within my constraints.

Y'all would be doing me a great favor to post photos of hats in each of these colors, as it's the color that will be the critical deciding factor. Throwing up an acorn fawn anything alongside these for comparison would be terrific. For example, is heritage fawn lighter than regency fawn, and, if so, by how much? Is dark fawn really a dark brown? Just what tone of "dark beige" is nullarbor tan, which in some photos appears quite brownish while in others more caramel.

Thanks!

Would love to see this thread resurrected. Anyone have more recent color swatches. The number of different greys alone is enough to drive someone mad:
Moonstone, Glen Grey, Mid Grey (DM), Carbon Grey, Graphite Grey ... !!

I don’t know if Akubra offers felt color swatches anymore. I’ve attached a link to a thread with more colors, but it doesn’t have any better information on Akubra colors. Sorry.

You forgot Cruiser Grey lol, thing is besides their own colour palette they also do custom colours for clients who do special orders (probably min order couple hundred lids or more).

Some colors have been eliminated all together. So colors are no longer available with certain hats. For example I have a Glen Gray Camp Draft & a Mid Brown Camp Draft, no longer available.

They have never been interested in a small run of open crown Camp Drafts in black. It has been run up the flagpole several times.

so crazy, was just wondering about this today. Was thinking about ordering the taupe fawn, but was wondering how different it is to tawny fawn? I have regency and tawny and there's a few shades difference. So was hoping it will be somewhere in the middle. I also have acorn. And there's heritage too. aye ya ya  But yeah, they all pretty close. I probably would have bought different colors had I known because I've got a lot of similar stuff now.

So is the full list of Greys now: Moonstone, Glen Grey, Mid Grey (DM), Cruiser Grey, Carbon Grey, Graphite Grey?
I've also seen Carbon and Graphite listed without the word Grey - Are those different? Any I've missed? I've attempted to order them from light to dark, but I may have it wrong, and I'm interested in how much darker each one is. I would also be interested to know which, if any, have a decidedly bluish cast, because that is what I personally want. Did Akubra ever make a Steel or Gun Metal color? I saw a photo of a Gannon Steel beaver fur, and that looked like just what doctor ordered, but how can one really know from pics on the web!? All I can say for sure is that my Everything-Australian Adventurer in "Graphite" is a black hat as far as I'm concerned. And my Stylemaster in "Carbon Grey" is a very dark grey such as to be effectively black in many indoor lighting settings.

That's the thing, whom did you buy those hats from? I think it's whom you bought your hat from that had that model Akubra hat custom died for them and then on-sold to end user (Us). If a large enough order is placed, Akubra pretty much make which ever hat of their range in almost any colour the client asks for. Akubra still use the colour Glen Grey and Mid Brown in different productions for different clients.

EG: Akubra themselves sell direct to the public, so say I want a Hampton model hat from Akubra. If I buy it direct from Akubra they officially offer 2 choices in colour only. If I go to say one of the large/popular hat stores I can find a much larger range of colour options, as that distributor/store has had custom colour runs done for them and then they sell these onto the general public.

Heck Akubra will make a custom hat even if enough interest is placed by one of it's larger customers, EG: The Akubra Federation and why you can only buy that hat at one store. This is why certain models or colours can only be purchased from different specialist hat stores, Akubra have their own base range of hats & colours and the rest are custom runs.

So while I can't buy a Cruiser Grey colour in the Hampton model hat direct from Akubra I can from say Hats by the Hundred.
They have never been interested in a small run of open crown Camp Drafts in black. It has been run up the flagpole several times.

The key word here is "small run" if one of their larger customers/distributors placed a large enough order of a said model in a specific colour Aklubra would make them. Not sure of the number of hats that need to be ordered to get a custom colour done but it would have to be enough hats to fill Akubra's smallest dying vat's at a guess.

Ok, as to my understanding (I could be wrong and often am lol) the Different Grey's used in order from Darkest to light. Carbon and graphite are the same as Carbon Grey and Graphite Grey

Graphite - Carbon Grey - Glen Grey - Mid Grey - Cruiser Grey - Moonstone.

Now we have to remember everyone's idea or perception of any said given colour can be slightly different, as can a set colour between dye batches. Each batch will be the same but when comparing 2 hats the same colour but from different dye batch runs you may well see a difference. So there's always going to be some variations, some of the greys though different name verge over each other and you might think them the same though differently labelled.

In poor or low light they are all fairly dark except the moonstone, some of them don't come to life until they are in strong light. Felt is fairly reflective like hair (well it is hair I guess lol) so light or the type of light can have a dramatic effect on how it appears to look.

I have carbon and graphite. They are not the same. Graphite is basically black. You can maybe pick up some very very very dark grey "pencil lead" like qualities in the bright bright sun.

Carbon meanwhile is a very dark grey and has a deep purplish sort of hue to it.

To note, the graphite is the Banjo from DM, so not sure if their graphite is different than any other offerings. And the carbon is a Fed 4 from HD.

Anyone ever seen an Akubra Territory in a grey? I'm looking at one of those for international travel in late Spring / early Summer of 2023. I already have an Akubra Riverina in khaki, so would prefer a second vented felt to not be an earthtone, but only seem to see the Territory ever available in Khaki or Sand.

I‘m not trying to be a smarty-ass here, but as long as you can only wear one hat at a time, why does it matter?
