Excellent catch!

Those are enormous hats lol...I wonder who was sending all the requests for "Western"-style beaver hats?

Leave it to Beaver

I find it humorous that Australians [I always feel funny calling them Aussies... I feel too much like a Yank to do that] want Americanized "western" hats while we want Outback styled hats.

Hope that they branch into country or fedora styles with the beavers!

Thanks for linking, Duper!

Of the three pictures shown, my favorite is the third due to it's simplicity. There's something I like about the light color, and the contrasting leather band.

I think the light sand Saddle Bronc is my favorite. I'm not big on contrast binding, but that one does something for me. The tanbark is cool, too.

I doubt I'll ever buy an Akubra, but I appreciate that they're open about the content of the blend.

If the binding on the Tanbark is the lighter brown, I think that would make a very cool hat. If it's the same color, meh...

Now, I may be branching out into Oz-style now, but it will be a good long while before I could even consider myself wearing one of these without laughing, beaver or not.

All I ask is that the make a beaver version of a Stylemaster, Fed, or Camp Draft.

Hmm, I'm curious about that too. Is it just that you have enough vintage hats that you can't justify a modern purchase?

Yes. It's not a comment on quality (as I have never touched an Akubra) or appearance (the CD is a really nice looking hat), but I'm done with modern production hats unless something comes around that really blows my mind. For the cost of two Akubras, I can get most vintage hats in 7 3/8 or better, and for less than three Akubras, I can get an Art. At a smaller size, 7 1/4 or under, it's often less than 2 Akubras for a vintage. There are certainly exceptions.

I can see Akubra as a good starting point, as they seem to have a good rep. here, but in light of the other options if one chooses to save his pennies, I can't understand wanting to own more than one or two.

I can appreciate that point of view. I myself would probably not be inclined towards Akubras in favor of Art's or vintage. My wardrobe fits the smart casual and "outdoorsman" look, for which most Akubra's fit the bill.

I just don't have nice clothes to go with nice hats, and my college path is taking me in a career direction where suits would be sort of out-of-place.

Dopes. They need Beaver bodies in the Campdraft and the Federation, at least. Gotta be better & less expensive than that pure beaver Indy hat DP foisted upon the world!

Did I miss any mention of just how much scratch they're getting for these big boys? If not (or even if so), does anyone here happen to know?

Are you asking if there's any mention of how expensive they'll be?

If so, I don't think there was...I don't really want to know, either lol! Honestly, I can't really imagine that they'd price under $200, and at that point I'm not sure they'd be the best value in beaver hats...I'll stick to rabbit :D.

Love #1

I really love that first hat with the dark binding on the light hat. It says dressy to me, though. I wouldn't wear a hat like that in casual clothes. It really is sharp, tho.

I am NOT a fan, however, of airing holes in a hat. That ruins it for me.

It's refreshing that they state the % of Beaver fur in the mix....

.... and NOT just make the statement that it is a "Beaver fur" hat! As to why they would bring out a big brimmed American Western style only, think of their main market, USING hat wearers, who tend to own mabe just one hat and wear it for ALL purposes as many folks down here in Texas do. Making it in a American Western style broadens the market as well and as for the grommeted vent holes in the crown, I go back to the WORKING nature of the hats they make!

Gotcha. The short nature of your comment piqued my curiosity. I can completely understand where you're coming from.

I'd go to more vintage hats, but I'm like Barney Fife in that I don't like other people wearing my hat and vice versa. I like having sweat stains that are my own, not ones that who knows who put on a liner.

Interesting

This is good news for me, since I own and wear many western hats. I've never liked Akubra's "cowboy" hats, because for some reason, pure rabbit fur just feels hotter than hell on me when I'm working. Maybe I'll be able to throw some of my Resistol and Stetson money in another direction. I know most of the hats I've got, western-wise, don't have 100% beaver, but for my taste a little beaver in the mix makes for a thinner, more breathable hat for riding and keeping the sun off my nose and neck. I'm already a pretty faithful consumer of Akubra's fedora-style hats. Looking forward to seeing how their prices compare to the American alternatives. Frank
