You might be happy to hear that the MythBusters busted this myth - they could not get a cell phone to make a spark no matter what they tried

I am not sure what mythbusters you mean but a station in Houston blew up not too long ago for this reason on the news. All the Sam's Club gas stations have signs posted.

Maybe it has to do with static and climate in certain areas?

when I flew home from Chicago I forgot that I was wearing a girdle under my dress....one with steel boning....they pulled me out of line on that one....wearing hat and gloves and everything. The TSA guys were giggling as they called over the female agent to search me.
Most recently my best friend and I were flying home from john wayne airport to san jose and she got stopped, searched, sat in a chair in a corner, reprimanded and escorted back out through security to have to go through again.....over a snowglobe. We had to check said snowglobe and then get back in line. Lucky for us the shuttle had dropped us off 2 hours early...

More :eek:fftopic:

The MythBusters are on Discovery and they "bust" myths, testing things like cell phones make gas stations blow up.

They concluded that it IS the static discharge that is a far bigger danger and could be the underlying cause of gas station flare ups.

See Mythbusters ep guide here

and Snopes.com here

interesting! :)

"Don't you know those snowglobes are dangerous? You could bash the side of someone's head in with one..."

Only possible explanation I can see for the neueStasi on that one...

well the lady who searched her certainly made us both feel like criminals

Nashoba, it's the "making you feel like a criminal" part that is especially galling. In my rush to catch a flight recently in Austin I forgot to take a water bottle out of my brief case. I got quite a lecture about that. I'm over 50 and not a child. A polite reminder of the rules would have been sufficient.

Brad, I'll try the braces trick you suggest. When I travel on business I'm usually dressed in suit and tie. And if I'm going to be somewhere for more than a day, I add a hat to the mix as well. I hate having to switch from braces to belt then back again.

They escorted us out of the terminal area into the check in area and wouldn't let her carry her own bag. They carried it for her and wouldn't give it back to her until we were 'safely' over her invisible line. It was very odd. over a snowglobe...who knew? better safe than sorry I suppose but still. it was a snowglobe for heavens sake

When all the post-911 security measures were first implemented, they simply took the forbidden item and tossed it with a grin (as if it were funny). I lost a very expensive manicure set that my wife had given me that way. Not that business travel was ever fun, but it sure has became grim at times.

Sorry about the snow globe. I guess you have no choice but to add to global warming by having it shipped to your home next time.

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely.

But it's also absolutely AWESOME! :D

For the most part the pre-flight screening process is merely smoke and mirrors to impress the rubes. They are catching no more test objects (fake guns / knives / bombs) today than they did 10 years ago with that "incompetent private security" in place.

Those who would trade a little liberty for perceived safety and real, demonstrable inefficiencies, costs and inconveniences deserve none of the above.

Don't MAKE me come up there, Marine... being forced to operate in cold weather only hacks me off, and I'm neither as likable nor as forgiving when I get to the point of "hacked off"...

However, I will give you a :arated: on this part...

And I'm sorry about the indignity you had to endure too. That's the real issue.

Nah we took it in stride mostly. We were annoyed at the lady, but both of us have spent enough time in law enforcement and around the military to appreciate what the public believes is increased security vs what it really is. Carebear is right, smoke and mirrors. The lady was just doing her job, ridiculous as it was. I bought my friend lunch at the airport bar and we laughed about it. We call it the great snowglobe caper ;)
